Penalties alter Canadian Grand Prix grid

Carlos Sainz received a three-place grid penalty for the Canadian Grand Prix after impeding Pierre Gasly during qualifying. Gasly had to swerve to avoid a collision, and the incident affected his lap time, resulting in his being knocked out of the session. Sainz's penalty meant he started 11th on the grid, with Oscar Piastri, Alex Albon, and his teammate Charles Leclerc moving up. Yuki Tsunoda received a penalty for a separate incident involving Nico Hulkenberg, while Lance Stroll was penalized for obstructing Esteban Ocon in Q2. Hulkenberg also received a penalty for not slowing down enough during a red flag, causing a reshuffling of the starting positions, with Fernando Alonso moving up to second and Lewis Hamilton and George Russell gaining a position each.

Leclerc: Ferrari made life ‘way too difficult'

Charles Leclerc faced difficulties during qualifying as he failed to advance from Q2 and started from the 10th position due to penalties imposed on other drivers. Leclerc expressed frustration with Ferrari's strategy, specifically their decision not to switch to slick tires when it was the favorable choice. He believed Alex Albon's early switch to slicks was the correct decision and expressed frustration with the team's decision to stick with intermediate tires. Leclerc emphasized the need for improvement in similar situations and intended to have an internal discussion with the team to address the issue.

Gasly slams Sainz's "extremely dangerous" driving

Pierre Gasly criticized Carlos Sainz's driving behavior during the Canadian Grand Prix qualifying. Gasly was on his final fast lap when he encountered a group of cars, including Sainz, who was moving slowly and about to start his own lap. Gasly had to abandon his lap and ended up in 17th place, while Sainz received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Gasly and qualified eighth. Gasly described Sainz's actions as "completely unacceptable" and expressed frustration that Sainz was driving slowly and focusing only on his own lap without considering other drivers on the track. He called for a review of such incidents and emphasized the need for improved communication between drivers to prevent future occurrences.
