How Newey ‘almost bankrupted’ Aston Martin

Christian Horner, the Team Principal of Red Bull Racing, has revealed that Adrian Newey, Red Bull Racing's Chief Technical Officer, almost left Aston Martin penniless with his extensive design work on the Aston Martin Valkyrie. As an OEM, the cost of production was "absolutely driven into anything in everything they do," Newey "stretched the budget to the very limit," quipped Horner, adding that it produced "an absolute gem of a car." He also said Red Bull has learned many lessons for future projects, such as the forthcoming "ultimate track car," the RB17, which will exceed the downforce level of their Formula 1 machinery. Horner also spoke of the various projects that Red Bull's Advanced Technology arm is working on and that they are continuing to explore new avenues.

Top team predictions ahead of Imola

The 2023 Formula 1 season heads to Emilia Romagna for the first weekend of a triple header. Mercedes, Ferrari, and Aston Martin are introducing upgrades for this race, which could determine their fate in the constructors' championship. Fantasy F1 players should keep an eye on Charles Leclerc, George Russell, and the Ferrari constructor as candidates to join the discussion of viable fantasy options. Alpha Tauri rookie Nyck De Vries is running out of time to prove himself after a rocky start to the season and could be replaced as early as the Canadian Grand Prix. Imola is known for low overtake numbers, and data predicts the lowest overtake total of the season on Sunday, meaning that budget driver selection may be more challenging.

During his 18 years as Team Principal, Tost oversaw the development of drivers including Max Verstappen, Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, and Daniil Kvyat. Drivers who have come through the Red Bull stable have paid tribute to Tost for his guidance and support. Verstappen credits Tost with helping him in the early stages of his career, while Nyck de Vries expresses gratitude for Tost's support since joining the grid this season. Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda also praise Tost for his ability to understand and work with drivers' different personalities and requirements.

F1 can't stop Red Bull's dominance

Red Bull's current dominance in the 2023 Formula 1 season, with five consecutive wins and a lead of over 100 points in the constructors' championship, cannot be prevented by F1, according to CEO Stefano Domenicali. Although Red Bull's stranglehold on the series cannot be stopped, the introduction of the cost cap is expected to help minimize the gap in the short term. Domenicali acknowledged that Red Bull has done a better job than other teams, but he believes it is too soon to declare the championship over.
