What Hulkenberg’s big day says about Sauber

Nico Hulkenberg scored his first-ever Formula 1 podium after 239 races, finishing third at Silverstone with a brilliant drive from the back of the grid. The result sparked wild celebrations in the Sauber garage, as it marked the team’s first podium since 2012 and highlighted their growing momentum ahead of their transformation into Audi’s works team next year. Team boss Jonathan Wheatley praised Hulkenberg’s flawless race and said he’s always believed the German was capable of this kind of performance. After a terrible 2024 season, Sauber has bounced back with smart upgrades and strong strategy calls and now sits an unexpected sixth in the constructors’ standings.

Winners and losers from a wild Mid-Ohio 200

Scott Dixon won the Mid-Ohio race after Alex Palou, who led most of the day, made a rare mistake and ran off track with six laps to go. Team Penske’s struggles continued with poor qualifying and a crash that took out multiple drivers, including Will Power and Graham Rahal. Young drivers Kyffin Simpson and Nolan Siegel impressed in qualifying and held their own on race day despite setbacks, while others like O’Ward, Rosenqvist, and Veekay made gains with smart strategies. Meanwhile, Christian Rasmussen ran out of fuel due to a team error, and Robert Shwartzman brought some humor to a tough season with a viral video moment, despite finishing 21st.

Tensions flare again between Bowman and Wallace

Alex Bowman and Bubba Wallace clashed again in the final laps of the Chicago Street Race as they battled hard for position and ended in contact that spun Wallace out. He dropped to 28th, while Bowman finished 8th and advanced in the $1 million bracket challenge. After the race, they had a short conversation, but it didn’t turn into a major argument, just some clear tension. Their rivalry goes back to 2019 and has flared up many times, so it’s not clear if this latest clash is the end or just the next chapter.

Winners and losers from the Chicago Street Race

Shane van Gisbergen led the way in Chicago, winning his second straight race on a road course. Ty Gibbs matched his best career finish in second, and Tyler Reddick followed with another top-five in third. Ryan Preece had his best road course finish in seventh and is now just two points away from the playoff cut. Austin Hill got his best Cup result in ninth, and Ty Dillon moved on in the In-Season Challenge. But William Byron finished last and lost a big chunk of his points lead, while Bubba Wallace fell to 28th after a late crash. Will Brown was taken out early in a chain-reaction wreck, and Michael McDowell's race ended after a throttle problem.

Lessons from Silverstone

The 2025 British Grand Prix delivered chaos, as Lando Norris claimed his second straight win after Oscar Piastri lost out due to a controversial penalty. Nico Hulkenberg finally got his first F1 podium after 16 years, thanks to a great drive and smart strategy from Sauber. Red Bull’s low-downforce setup didn’t work in the rain, leaving Max Verstappen unable to fight for the win, while Ferrari struggled with a mystery issue that may be linked to their engine. Other stories included more mistakes from Franco Colapinto, Carlos Sainz getting fed up with his bad luck, Alonso upset about team strategy again, and Mercedes admitting they made a bad tire choice that ruined both drivers’ races.
