What is the bag policy for IMSA races?

The IMSA WeatherTech Championship is a series that allows fans to feel as close to the action as possible. IMSA is famously fan-friendly and operates under a generous carry-in policy that is designed to support the endurance nature of sports car racing. Rules can vary at each circuit, but here’s our general rule of thumb that you can follow to make sure you bring all the essentials to feel comfortable over long hours and ultimately enjoy the race weekend to its fullest!

The General Bag and Cooler Rules

Like NASCAR, IMSA is one of the few series that encourages you to bring your own refreshments and gear, but size limits are enforced for safety and security.

  • Bags and Backpacks
    • Bags, backpacks, and camera bags are permitted, provided they do not exceed a maximum size of 18” x 18” x 14”
  • Clear Bag Policy
    • Unlike some stadium sports, clear bags are generally not required at IMSA races but they can make security easier
  • Coolers (The IMSA Standard)
    • One (1) soft-sided cooler per person is typically allowed, with a maximum size of 14” x 14” x 14”
    • Foam or hard-sided coolers are NOT allowed from entry to the grandstands and viewing areas at most tracks

NOTE: All bags and coolers are subject to search upon entry. Keep your bags organized to help speed up the process!

Bring Your Essentials

Since most IMSA races are longer than 2.5 hours, you are highly encouraged to bring essential items that ensure you stay comfortable throughout the day, including into the night for the 10+ hour races. We had t-shirts on during the day and winter coats on at night for the Rolex 24.
