Formula 1 Announces Return of the Turkish Grand Prix as of 2027

Breaking: Formula 1 has announced its return to Turkiye’s Istanbul Park with a five year deal starting in 2027.

Formula 1 announced some very exciting news ahead of the 2026 Miami Grand Prix. F1 will be returning to the Tϋrkiye Istanbul Park starting in 2027 as a new five year agreement has been made with the Turkish Grand Prix. The agreement was confirmed with Tϋrkiye’s Ministry of Youth and Sports which will see the Grand Prix run until 2031 until further notice. The Turkish Automobile Sports Federation (TOSFED) will be Formula 1’s official delivery partner for the Grand Prix and any other future events that are planned at Istanbul Park.

Istanbul Park was first introduced to the Formula 1 calendar in 2005 and has since hosted nine Grands Prix. In recent years, the circuit hosted the 2020 and 2021 Grands Prix. Most notably, it’s where Lewis Hamilton claimed his seventh Drivers’ Championship title in 2020 and where Valtteri Bottas claimed his last Formula 1 win in 2021. Hamilton and Bottas are the only two drivers on the current F1 grid who have won the Turkish Grand Prix.

His Excellency, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, FIA President also contributed to the conversation around the Turkish Grand Prix’s historical and cultural value to the sport:

“Istanbul Park is a circuit that holds a special place in Formula 1 history, and its return underlines our shared commitment to expanding the championship in dynamic markets.”

In the earlier years of the circuit’s introduction to the calendar, it became well known as one of the most technically demanding circuits while also becoming a driver favorite. Felipe Massa currently holds the record for the most victories at Istanbul Park while other notable names like Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button have all claimed victories at the circuit as well.

Along with the announcement of the return, Tayyip Erdoğan, the President Recep of Tϋrkiye stated,

“I regard Tϋrkiye’s return to the Formula 1 calendar as a clear reflection of the strong confidence placed in our country - in our robust organisational capacity; in our modern sports and healthcare infrastructure, and, of course, in the renowned hospitality of the Turkish Nation.”

President and CEO of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, extended his appreciation to President Erdoğan, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Turkish Automobile Sports Federation for their support and assistance in bringing this deal to life. Domenicali also continued saying,

“We are delighted to be returning to the incredible and vibrant city of Istanbul from 2027 to thrill all our fans in Tϋrkiye and around the world on one of the most exciting and challenging circuits in Formula 1. As a city, Istanbul represents a cultural gateway between Europe and Asia, offering a unique blend of history and tradition with a forward-thinking approach to sport, business, and entertainment.”

Many people are speculating around which circuit it will be replacing, and with Zandvoort’s contract coming to an end this year, it seems that without a doubt it will be replacing the Dutch Grand Prix. That being said, no official announcement has been made yet. Eren Üçlertopraği, the President of FIA Member Club, the Turkish Automobile Sports Federation (TOSFED) also shared his thoughts and excitement around the announcement.

“Preparations are already well underway for the race, scheduled for 2027. Thanks to utilising full strength of our State, we will work tirelessly to host an organisation worthy of Tϋrkiye and Istanbul, performed in front of packed grandstands."

Lastly, Mohammed Ben Sulayem went on to say,

“Through this strong collaboration we are not only securing the long-term future of Formula 1 in Tϋrkiye, but also supporting the continued development of motorsport, strengthening the foundations for sustainable growth in the years to come.”

The announcement of the Turkish Grand Prix is a very exciting step for Formula 1 and with it being introduced back into the 2027 season, Formula 1 fans everywhere are anticipating the official announcement of the 2027 F1 calendar.
