F1 Fantasy Formation Lap: Antonelli Dominating Austria

The Austrian Grand Prix feels like a turning point for F1 Fantasy managers to start separating themselves. Budget building is key as the top teams approach having four tier-A assets.

The Red Bull Ring has averaged 90 overtakes over the past three seasons, making it one of the best for overtakes on the calendar. Drivers can recover from poor qualifying sessions, strategy plays a larger role, and midfield teams have legitimate opportunities to score fantasy points.

After Friday's practice sessions, one thing stood out: Mercedes may still have the fastest package, but McLaren and Ferrari look ready to make this a fight.

The Breakdown: Mercedes Leads, Others Gaining

Kimi Antonelli is back and impossible to ignore this weekend.

Formula 1’s Championship leader topped both Friday practice sessions, finishing just ahead of George Russell in FP1 before backing it up with another fastest lap in FP2.

Mercedes looked comfortable from the moment the track opened. Russell admitted afterward that FP1 was influenced by several rivals experiencing mechanical issues, but by the afternoon, the picture became much clearer.

McLaren and Ferrari are a threat.

Oscar Piastri finished second in FP2, Lando Norris third, and both looked considerably stronger than they had earlier in the day after overcoming reliability issues that limited their morning running.

Russell even admitted McLaren's pace surprised Mercedes, particularly over longer runs.

Ferrari also appears to be hiding more performance than Friday's timing screens suggest.

Lewis Hamilton finished fifth despite staying within striking distance of the leaders, while Charles Leclerc, running Ferrari's updated power unit for the first time after sitting out FP1, ended the afternoon eighth. Mercedes believes Ferrari may have been running conservatively while gathering data on the new package.

Red Bull remains difficult to read.

Max Verstappen recovered from a host of issues, including anti-stall problems, seat adjustments, and setup concerns, to finish fourth in FP2, while teammate Isack Hadjar continued his impressive form in seventh.

They have pace and typically do well at their home circuit.

The Price Watch: Stay With The Formula

Buy: Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari

Hamilton continues to look strong and is the biggest threat to Antonelli.

His 56-point performance in Spain marked his third race above 40 fantasy points this season, something he managed only four times combined across the previous two years.

He needs only four points to earn the maximum price increase, the lowest threshold among Tier-A drivers.

Ferrari's upgraded power unit is the talk of the weekend. How close to even can Ferrari get with Mercedes?

Friday wasn't spectacular, but both Ferrari drivers remained close enough to the front that qualifying could completely change the outlook. There’s also plenty of talk of sandbagging.

Hamilton, paired with Antonelli, continues to offer one of the safest combinations of scoring potential and budget growth among the premium options.

Sell: Cadillac

This is an obvious one, but sometimes the decision makes itself.

Cadillac had a terrible Friday.

Sergio Perez suffered mechanical failures in both practice sessions, while Valtteri Bottas managed only six laps in FP2 before reporting smoke inside the cockpit. The team later extinguished a fire underneath Bottas' car as both Cadillacs finished at the bottom of the timesheets.

Reliability has haunted Cadillac throughout the season, and Friday might have been the scariest day of the season.

For F1 Fantasy managers trying to find points and continue growing their budget, this isn't the weekend to gamble on Cadillac.

Under the Radar: Hadjar and Racing Bulls Keep Delivering

Liam Lawson finished ninth in FP2, while Arvid Lindblad finished 12th. Hadjar has been a top-8 driver over the last few races at a midfield price.

All three continue to offer different paths depending on the budget.

Lindblad is the best play for budget and points this weekend. Lawson also remains one of the strongest value plays in the game. Hadjar needs only three points for a maximum budget gain and is carrying 22 points over from the last race.

The Red Bull Ring also suits this group.

With overtaking opportunities throughout the lap and midfield battles expected all afternoon Sunday, the non-Max Red Bulls are all great plays at Austria.

Pick of the Week: Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton

Antonelli enters qualifying after leading both practice sessions, leading the Drivers' Championship, and is a clear favorite for both pole position and the race victory.

McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull could be getting closer, but none of them have matched Antonelli's week-to-week consistency. He needs 40 points to get a maximum budget gain, but if he dominates as expected, he should be fine.

Hamilton is the clear threat to Antonelli and the best fantasy play. He will carry 56 F1 Fantasy points over from his victory in Barcelona and only needs four in Austria to reach the maximum budget gain. Depending on your budget and looking ahead, the sooner you can pair these two, the better. Antonelli and Hamilton lead in fantasy scoring, while costing 4th and 6th in value, respectively.

Keep backing Antonelli. Start believing in Hamilton for the long haul.
