F1 Fantasy Formation Lap: Russell on Track for Perfect Weekend

It’s Sprint weekend in China, and after Sprint Qualifying, the picture is already clear. Mercedes is again far away the fastest car, George Russell delivered the Sprint pole with ease, and the data suggests the Silver Arrows could control the entire weekend.

We already have the biggest F1 Fantasy question of the season so far: should players lean fully into the Mercedes dominance, maybe even use the Limitless chip, or stay patient with Ferrari and McLaren close enough to disrupt things?

Behind Merc’s dominance, the Formula 1 midfield is the most intriguing part of this weekend. Haas and Racing Bulls again show the pace to deliver fantasy value, while Alpine and Audi, led by Pierre Gasly and Nico Hulkenberg, respectively, looked poised to fight for points.

The Breakdown: Mercedes in Control

Sprint Qualifying told the story quickly, and it wasn’t a surprise. George Russell grabbed pole and now sits as the overwhelming favorite across every betting market. He’s -1100 to finish top 3 in the Sprint, -275 for pole in qualifying, and -250 to win the race.

That lines up with some remarkably dominant performance data. Mercedes lead the field in slow, medium, and high-speed corners, with roughly a half-second pace advantage over the rest of the grid.

Russell looks untouchable right now. Antonelli sits right behind him in both pace and betting odds, and Mercedes has a legitimate chance to lock out the front row again in Qualifying and the race. For F1 Fantasy players, that creates the rare situation where the most expensive constructor might still be the safest play.

Ferrari remains the clear second team, if they choose to be. Lewis Hamilton lines up P4 for the Sprint and sits -155 for a Sprint podium thanks to their fast starts. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc remains firmly in the mix despite losing roughly half a second on the back straight in SQ3. Ferrari and that launch package could make Hamilton a serious podium threat if he jumps Norris early. The question is whether Ferrari can stay out of its own way after another questionable strategy call last week.

McLaren is the wildcard. Lando Norris snuck into P3 despite the car not being quite as strong as Ferrari on paper, and both Norris and Oscar Piastri look quicker than a frustrated Max Verstappen this weekend. That’s a strange sentence to write in 2026, but the numbers back it up.

Red Bull, meanwhile, looks like they are in trouble. Verstappen described the car’s pace as a “disaster,” and the data agrees. Red Bull sits over a second off Mercedes in qualifying simulations, dropping them into the midfield pack with Haas and Alpine.

That suddenly makes Verstappen a very awkward F1 Fantasy decision. He still carries the highest driver price at $28M, but his race win odds sit all the way back at +2800. And of course, it’s Max Verstappen. How many times have we seen Max show up when no one expects him? You can almost throw all the data out the window when it comes to Max. Maybe this weekend, it matters.

The Price Watch: Mercedes and the Midfield

Buy: Mercedes

Sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one. Mercedes cost $29.6M, but they project for 91.7 expected points — by far the highest total of any constructor.

Russell and Antonelli both sit inside the top three in Sprint odds, the team leads every corner category in the performance data, and the betting markets suggest Russell could sweep the weekend.

That makes Mercedes the rare constructor who might justify both their price and a Limitless chip. We don’t know how long they will be this dominant and pace ahead of the field. It might be smart to take advantage of it now, because being favored to go 1-2 in the Sprint, Qualifying, and the race likely won’t happen again.

Sell: Red Bull

This one feels strange, but the numbers don’t lie.

Red Bull costs $28.5M, yet their expected return sits barely half of Mercedes’ projection. The car struggles through corners, Verstappen qualified only eighth for the Sprint, and even the betting markets have shifted dramatically.

Verstappen at +2800 to win the race simply doesn’t justify his price tag right now, even if he is Max Verstappen.

Until Red Bull figures out their balance issues, the smart fantasy move is to look elsewhere. They are closer to midfield runners than they are Mercedes right now.

Under the Radar: Haas

For the second straight race weekend, Haas looks like the strongest midfield team. So in that respect, they aren’t under the radar, but when you look at Red Bull’s struggles, Haas could be the 4th team right now.

Oliver Bearman continues to impress, and the team sits right in the performance window with Alpine and Racing Bulls. The betting markets don’t expect them to challenge the podium, but they don’t need to.

Haas costs just $8M, projects solid points, and should benefit if Shanghai produces the overtakes and chaos it often does. And if the Australia trend continues, we could see record overtakes, and no one had more overtakes points than Haas last season.

For fantasy players hunting value, Haas remains one of the safest budget plays on the grid.

Pick of the Week: Kimi Antonelli

If Russell is the safest play on the board, Kimi Antonelli might be the smartest one.

The rookie lines up P2 for the Sprint and has the second-best odds across all events for the weekend behind his teammate. Mercedes is the fastest car in Shanghai by a comfortable margin.

From a fantasy standpoint, Antonelli sits in the sweet spot. At $23.5M, he’s significantly cheaper than Russell, but still carries nearly the same scoring ceiling this weekend. Kimi currently has half the ownership rate of Leclerc, but is the clear favorite behind Russell.

If Russell dominates as expected, Antonelli is the driver most likely to sit right behind him, collecting points. And if anything happens at the front, Kimi becomes a very real contender to steal the race. With this combo, 3X Boost is really powerful. Will we ever have 2 drivers this far out in front again?
