The last Dutch Grand Prix didn’t disappoint in terms of the on-track excitement, but unfortunately part of that excitement came at the expense of the hometown hero, Max Verstappen, who DNF’d at the beginning of the race and automatically putting his F1 Fantasy score in the negatives. The midfield also struggled with further reliability issues as Mercedes cemented its stronghold as the best constructor after both Silver Arrows drivers finished on the podium. Winners and Losers below…
Winners
Lando Norris
Sprint: P3
Qualifying: P1
Race: P1
The reigning Formula 1 World Champion took back-to-back wins in Hungary and Zandvoort from pole and was the highest-scoring F1 Fantasy driver from the race with 57 F1 Fantasy points. It was looking dicey for Norris after he lost the lead to Kimi Antonelli on the second restart, but he was able to pull off a sensational overtake around the outside of turn 1 after the second round of pit stops. He was rewarded for his efforts with Driver of the Day, ultimately banking an $0.6M increase in price on the weekend. Any team who happened to have 3x on Norris and 2x on Antonelli will be especially rewarded, but I’m not sure how many team managers took that risk…
Mercedes
Sprint: P1 (Russell) and P4 (Antonelli)
Qualifying: P2 (Russell) and P3 (Antonelli)
Race: P2 (Antonelli) and P3 (Russell)
George Russell and Antonelli swapped positions due to late stage team orders, but they were both able to finish on the podium to end the weekend with Mercedes scoring 84 fantasy points, the highest of any constructor. Russell will be disappointed to have given up the place and three championship points to his younger teammate, but the move will have delighted 36% of team owners who run Antonelli (14 percentage points more than who own Russell). The Mercedes constructor remains the safest bet for big points. Mercedes also gained $0.3M in budget.
Nico Hulkenberg
Sprint: Not Classified
Qualifying: P13
Race: P8
Nico Hulkenberg experienced intense highs and lows during the Zandvoort weekend. He retired from the Sprint race, and his Grand Prix started out dramatically when he narrowly avoided T-boning his teammate, Gabriel Bortoleto, who spun in the last corner of the first lap. Hulkenberg dodged the incident and recovered to finish in P8, scoring him $0.6M in budget and 5 F1 Fantasy points.
Fernando Alonso
Sprint: P18
Qualifying: P18
Race: P9
Aston Martin started this season abysmally, multiple seconds off the pace in testing and unable to complete the full race distance without injuring their drivers’ hands due to excessive vibrations. However, post-summer break, an extensive upgrade package has led them to the points for just the second time this season. Alonso ended the Dutch Grand Prix with an extremely impressive 24 F1 Fantasy points from strong overtakes in the Sprint and the Grand Prix, the latter of which he finished in P9. He received more F1 Fantasy points than Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri, and solidified himself as a strong B-tier asset moving forward.
Losers
Max Verstappen
Sprint: P6
Qualifying: P7
Race: DNF
Max Verstappen’s last home race was over almost before it started when the Dutchman had a huge crash on the damp track right before the start-finish straight on just the first lap of the race. Verstappen was able to walk away safely, but the same cannot be said of his mangled Red Bull chassis. Red Bull had been struggling for grip and driveability the whole weekend, and they were clearly the slowest of the Big Four teams: Red Bull, Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari. But it all came down to Verstappen’s tire clipping the white line and he lost the car and race. Verstappen was able to score some F1 Fantasy points from his Sprint and Qualifying performances, but he still finished the weekend in the red with -13 points and a $0.1M price drop.
Haas
Sprint: P14 (Ocon) and P15 (Bearman)
Qualifying: P15 (Ocon) and P20 (Bearman)
Race: Bearman (DNF) and Ocon (DNF)
After Verstappen’s big crash, the race looked like it was getting started again when Ollie Bearman pulled over during the second formation lap. He was unable to keep going and unfortunately his race ended on lap 3. The team’s day went from bad to worse when his teammate, Esteban Ocon, also pulled over later in the race, causing a Virtual Safety Car. The team absorbs -40 F1 Fantasy points from the main race alone, though after factoring in their Sprint and Qualifying performances, their total weekend F1 Fantasy points haul comes in at -20.
Williams
Sprint: P16 (Albon) and P20 (Sainz)
Qualifying: P16 (Albon) and P17 (Sainz)
Race: P16 (Sainz) and DNF (Albon)
There are some actions drivers should never take in Formula 1, and crashing into your teammate and causing expensive damage on an already struggling team might be at the top of the list. Unfortunately, Carlos Sainz caused his Williams teammate to DNF after they crashed in the first corner late in the race. Alex Albon was unable to finish the race and Sainz received a 10- second penalty, guaranteeing a last place finish. The Williams constructor scored 15 F1 Fantasy points.
