Even with a lack of overtaking and overtaking F1 Fantasy points, the Monaco Grand Prix probably delivered the most topsy-turvy F1 Fantasy weekend so far this year. The grid was plagued with retirements and penalties for its top drivers, but at the end of the day, Kimi Antonelli was still able to win his fifth Grand Prix in a row. Winners and Losers from the Monaco Grand Prix below…
Winners
Kimi Antonelli
Qualifying: P1
Race: P1
Mercedes’ Italian junior driver is finding himself a constant on the winner’s list this year as he took another Grand Prix pole position and won in Monaco. The teenager got a clean getaway at the start and was able to control the race from there. He then survived a safety car restart and a standing restart to earn his first Grand Slam of his career as well, leading every lap of the race despite the multiple DNF’s. He also was voted Driver of the Day and drove the fastest lap of the race, meaning he scored 55 F1 Fantasy points and gained $0.3M in budget.
Oscar Piastri
Qualifying: P7
Race: P4
Oscar Piastri was another example of a driver who was able to keep himself out of trouble this weekend and capitalize on overtaking opportunities due to chaos ahead. After Russell and Gasly both had penalties that dropped them out of the points, Piastri was able to move further up the grid to score 19 F1 Fantasy points. His race was proof that just driving smoothly can take you far during a chaotic traditionally low-overtake race full of penalties. He increased in budget by $0.1M, making him an option for F1 Fantasy teams in the coming races as well.
VCARB
Qualifying: P10 (Lawson) and P15 (Lindblad)
Race: P5 (Lawson) and P6 (Lindblad)
VCARB was the mid-field team that was able to take advantage, F1 Fantasy-wise, of chaos upfront from the top teams. Staying out of late race trouble, racing smoothly, and qualifying well was the key for VCARB as they gained positions due to other misfortunes and became the second best performing F1 Fantasy team in Monaco. The drivers finished 5th and 6th in the race and earned a collective 42 F1 Fantasy points, of which 14 were just from positions gained. That made them the second-highest-scoring F1 Fantasy team behind Mercedes in Monaco.
Lewis Hamilton
Qualifying: P2
Race: P2
Lewis Hamilton used all his experience today to bring home back-to-back P2’s for Ferrari in the Monaco Grand Prix, despite having to absorb a five second penalty for speeding in the pit lane which didn’t ultimately end up affecting his finishing position. The seven-time World Champion was able to hold his position on the three different starts to finish on the podium again in the first race of the European leg of the Formula 1 season. He earned 27 F1 Fantasy points and gained $0.3M in value.
Losers
Limitless Users
The last three winners of the Monaco Grand Prix retired today–Verstappen, Norris, and Leclerc all failed to finish the race. None of the top four teams (Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren) were able to score points with both their drivers, as George Russell failed to score after a deluge of penalties. This meant that most Limitless teams will have to absorb one or more negative scores, which is not what these teams will have been hoping for when playing the chip at a track that generally has a predictable result post-Qualifying.
Max Verstappen
Qualifying: P2
Race: DNF
Max Verstappen went from challenging for pole position on Saturday to having an issue at the start of the race on Sunday and not being able to compete. As the lights went out, Verstappen’s car stalled on the grid and he immediately dropped down to P22 before eventually retiring the car at the end of the first lap. The Red Bull chassis had shown signs of speed and Verstappen was extremely pleased after Qualifying, but ultimately they weren’t able to show much of anything in the race. Verstappen ended with -11 F1 Fantasy points and a $0.1M price drop.
Lando Norris
Qualifying: P8
Race: DNF
The reigning World Champion and past Monaco Grand Prix race winner had a nightmare of a weekend this go around in Monaco. Two different engine failures plagued him in FP2 and the race, preventing him from finishing both sessions, ultimately handing Norris a -20 F1 Fantasy points penalty. He received three points for qualifying in P8, but an overall haul of -17 F1 Fantasy points is still very unfortunate for the McLaren driver in the team’s 1,000th Grand Prix. He will also lose another $0.3M in budget.
Lance Stroll
Qualifying: P22
Race: DNF
Lance Stroll was a popular F1 Fantasy pick this week because he was one of the drivers with the easiest target for price gains. Unfortunately, he crashed late in the race and was unable to keep going, handing him a DNF. Players who ran Lance wouldn’t have expected him to score significant F1 Fantasy points, but they did hope he could stay in the race and benefit from the chaos enough to gain some budget. Their hopes were futile, unfortunately, because instead of benefiting from the chaos, Stroll became part of it. He finished the weekend with -20 F1 Fantasy points and a $0.6M price drop.
Charles Leclerc
Qualifying: P4
Race: DNF
The hometown hero unfortunately wasn’t able to finish the Monaco Grand Prix after brake issues on a broken-up section of track caused a crash for the Ferrari driver after the safety car restart. He was en route for a P2 finish after a penalty for Lewis Hamilton before the safety car, but a strategy call by Ferrari and the subsequent crash meant that Leclerc was ultimately unable to finish the race. Leclerc finished with -13 F1 Fantasy points and a $0.3M price drop.
