It's officially cherry blossom season in Japan and that means the Japanese Grand Prix is quickly approaching. Personally, I love Suzuka as a track. It’s the only figure eight track that Formula 1 races on throughout the year. The high speed corners, the “S” Curves, the two Degner Curves, the Hairpin, and Spoon Curve all bring their unique flavor.
But enough about this legendary circuit. We’re here to look into some of the betting numbers for Japan in a new series called “Odds & Ends” where I look for places where I think the sportsbooks may be wrong. Without further adieu, let’s dive in.
Nico Hulkenberg or Gabriel Bortoletto Top 10 +300, both Top 10 for +1400
Audi has been in the news this week for losing team principal, Jonathan Wheatley, to Aston Martin for, allegedly, a larger paycheck. A familiar face, Mattia Binotto, will take over for him in the interim. Despite all the change at the top of the organization, this team has had great pace to start the season. Audi qualified 10th & 11th in Melbourne and Nico Hülkenberg qualified P11 in China for the Sprint and the Grand Prix. They already have a points finish with Gabriel Bortoleto finishing an impressive P9 in Melbourne for the teams first points of the season. The big issue isn’t their pace, it’s their reliability. Audi has failed to start a car in each of the first two Grands Prix of the season with Hülkenberg missing Australia and Bortoleto missing China. I understand it’s a bit of a gamble, but if this team can get both cars to start and finish the race, they have enough pace to get both cars in the points. And if you don’t trust them to keep both cars on track, I have just the thing for you.
Audi total classified drivers: 0 for +900. 1 for +220
In sports the best ability is often availability. Your freakish athleticism may not mean anything if you can’t stay healthy. I feel like the same can be said about Audi so far in 2026. The car has the pace to compete at the sharp end of the midfield, but has spent more time in the garage than on track. We can use practice as an indicator this weekend to see if Audi has found some answers or if they still struggle with reliability. If they have three clean practice sessions, I think this squad competes for points on Sunday in Suzuka. If their car continues to break down, it’s worth a look to bet on 0 or 1 Audi to finish the Grand Prix.
George Russell fastest qualifier and win race +140 vs. win race -190
George Russell has qualified on pole in two of the three Quali sessions we’ve had so far in 2026. When he started on pole, he converted both opportunities to race victories. So if you like Russell to win the race on Sunday, why not improve your odds a bit? He’s the favorite to qualify on pole and the favorite to win the race. So let’s combine them together and look to bet him at +140 instead of -190.
Fastest qualifier Charles Leclerc +900, Lewis Hamilton +1000
Mercedes is clearly the class of the field so far this season, but that can’t go on forever. Will Ferrari have enough pace to beat them in Saturday qualifying? Probably not, but they’re clearly the #2 car on the grid at the moment, so if anyone will beat the Silver Arrows, it’s likely to be the Scuderia. These odds tell us Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have about a 9-10% chance of qualifying on pole. I think it may be a bit higher than that, so these odds present a bit of value. Leclerc is one of the best qualifiers on the planet. And Hamilton has four pole positions, five wins and eight podiums at this track. If Mercedes falters in the slightest, Ferrari will be there to scoop up a pole position.
Fastest qualifier Max Verstappen +2500
Max Verstappen has three pole positions at Suzuka, seven podiums and four wins and is +2500 to be the fastest qualifier? Since this race moved to the spring in 2024, Max has been on pole twice and won the race twice. The two years prior to that when the race was later in the calendar? Yeah, Max won both of those from pole as well. Four poles and four race wins in four years means he’s got plenty of value at 25-1.
