The season opener in Australia set the tone for an action packed 2026 season. With a clearer sense of the running order, F1 Fantasy strategists must now pivot to prepare for the first Sprint weekend of the year. In this Fantasy Preview, we dive into the impact of overtakes on using the Limitless chip, highlight the drivers with an excellent history in China, and reveal the initial betting lines that suggest who sportsbooks believe will stand out this weekend.
To Limitless, Or Not to Limitless?

As one of the most powerful chips in F1 Fantasy, Limitless enables powerful teams at a time when budgets are still low. The Chinese Grand Prix presents a unique opportunity to use Limitless but a strong argument could be made to hold the chip for a future race. Let's break down the pros and cons of using Limitless in China:
Pros:
- Sprint weekends offer three events to score points, so Limitless teams running the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari, and Max Verstappen should haul in at least 300 points.
- Since Limitless teams revert back to the lineup from the previous race before calculating price changes, teams that gained $2.5-$3.3M in Australia could position themselves for another cost cap windfall while taking advantage of a high-scoring Limitless lineup — essentially the best of both worlds.
Cons:
- China routinely delivers some of the most overakes on the calendar. After 120 overtakes were made in Australia (enough to be the third most last season), China could see record overtaking totals from the midfield. If this happens, the difference between Limitless teams and non-Limitless teams shrinks and the scoring benefits of the chip are reduced.
- Sprint weekends move quickly and can end with disqualifications as teams fail to gather enough data to ensure the cars are running within the required parameters. Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, and Pierre Gasly were disqualified in China last season and any DSQs to top drivers on Limitless teams would deal a devastating blow.
China History

George Russell recorded his first podium in China last season after qualifying on the front row. His 35 fantasy points trailed only Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris and was the third highest total for the Briton in 2025. He only competed in one other Chinese Grand Prix with the Silver Arrows, a P6 finish in 2024 that netted 27 fantasy points. Russell enters as the favorite to win following an impressive season opener at Albert Park.
Charles Leclerc's history at this circuit is an ominous reminder about the risk of disqualifications on a Sprint weekend. Leclerc's car weighed just below the minimum in 2025, erasing a points finish and sending his fantasy result into a tailspin. Leclerc finished P5 in the Sprint and qualified P6 for the Grand Prix, an optimistic sign that Ferrari can contend for a podium on Sunday.
Esteban Ocon holds the best record among the midfield drivers in Shanghai. He finished P5 last season and delivered a season-high 24 fantasy points. In four appearances, he gained a total of 16 positions and improved from his starting position in each one. In a Ferrari-powered car with tremendous launch potential and in a Haas that appeared competitive in Australia, Ocon's potential is strong this weekend.
Weather Outlook

While the weather looks clear this weekend, keep an eye on the cooler temperatures — Shanghai could see temperatures in excess of 20 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than Melbourne last weekend. Cooler temperatures present new struggles for maintaining tire temperature and grip. With just one retirement at this race in 2025, the No Negative chip should continue to be held until a wet weekend.
Mercedes historically thrive in cooler conditions, which would render their current car untouchable if the W17 carries this strength carries into 2026.
Betting Lines

George Russell's impressive performance in Australia earned him the top betting line for the week and the most likely odds of winning a Grand Prix since The Fantasy Formula started tracking betting lines in 2025. Max Verstappen slots in between the two Ferrari drivers, while favorable lines for Oliver Bearman, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Arvid Lindblad suggest their strong performance last week was no fluke.
The Fantasy Formula is back to answer all of your questions ahead of the lineup lock deadline. The action begins one hour before the Sprint race, Friday at 10PM EST/Saturday 2AM GMT, only on the official FanAmp YouTube channel. See you there!
