Max Verstappen dominates in Italy, securing the win on Red Bull's 400th Grand Prix
The first European race on the 2025 calendar has wrapped up in an exciting dash to the finish. After starting from P2, Max Verstappen took the lead early on and kept it for the entire race. The McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri rounded off the podium.
Here is a full run-down of everything that happened during the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix:
Pre-Race:
- After a massive crash in Q1 on Saturday, Red Bull opted to replace Yuki Tsunoda’s entire power unit and exhaust, racking up a 20-place grid penalty.
- Tsunoda was already set to start from P20, and so started from the pitlane instead.
- After entering the fast lane too early during Q1, Franco Colapinto received a 1-place grid penalty, pushing him to P16, and Liam Lawson into P15.
Race Start:
- Max Verstappen had an excellent sweep through the Villeneuve chicane to cleanly take the lead from Oscar Piastri though the Villeneuve chicane
Race:
- Charles Leclerc had an early battle with Pierre Gasly for P9 that resulted in Gasly having a quick trip through the gravel as Leclerc took the position.
- Gasly dropped from P9 to P14
- Leclerc pitted to switch his mediums for hards on lap 11, triggering a series of very early pit stops from most of the field
- McLaren split their strategies, choosing to pit Piastri early and leave Lando Norris out for a longer first stint
- A virtual safety car was triggered by Esteban Ocon, who had a power issue on Lap 29, forcing him to stop on the side of the track
- Alex Albon and Isack Hadjar benefitted the most, launching into P3 and P5, respectively, by the time the green flag was waved
- Most of the front runners chose to pit during the VSC, with Verstappen and Norris coming out in the lead
- A full safety car was triggered on Lap 46, as Kimi Antonelli had a power issue and was forced to retire not far from where Ocon had his incident
- Piastri, Leclerc and Russell stayed out while most of the other front runners pitted yet again
- On the restart, Verstappen had had a great start, keeping the lead.
- Norris’s fresher tires helped him out as he overtook Piastri for P2 on lap 58
- Alex Albon dipped into the gravel, losing position to both Leclerc and Hamilton before slotting in between the two when Leclerc gave him the position back
Checkered Flag:
- Podium: Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri
- Williams scored double points, with Albon coming in P5 and Carlos Sainz in P8.
- Isack Hadjar became the only rookie to score points with a P9
- Tsunoda improved from P20 to P10, continuing his streak of points in the second Red Bull seat
