Red Bull debuts revised front wing after FIA crackdown

Red Bull changed its front wing for the Spanish Grand Prix to follow new FIA rules, keeping it stiff without adding much weight. McLaren, Mercedes, and Alpine didn’t report any shape changes to their wings, but McLaren quietly strengthened its wing with a support piece already used at Imola. Aston Martin, Haas, Ferrari, Racing Bulls, Sauber, and Williams all changed their front wings to meet the new tests and improve airflow. Ferrari and Mercedes also updated their rear wings, and Sauber added a new engine cover.

F1 sponsorship revenue hits $2bn in 2024

Formula One teams made $2.04 billion from sponsorships in 2024, which is the second highest after the NFL among big US sports. The average sponsorship deal in F1 is $6 million, much more than in US leagues, but F1 has fewer deals overall (340) compared to the NFL’s 3,466. Technology companies gave the most money, $543 million, followed by financial services with $379 million, and the most expensive ad spots cost up to $7.5 million per season. McLaren got the most new partners, helped by drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri who had over 50 million branded views, while Lewis Hamilton is the most popular driver in F1.

Colapinto could be penalized over engine rule breach

Franco Colapinto will get a 10-place grid penalty at the Spanish Grand Prix because Alpine put a fourth engine in his car, which is the most allowed this season. He took over the second Alpine car from Jack Doohan and will use the last new engine and a new exhaust at Barcelona. Colapinto hasn’t scored any points yet, and the team told him to be fast, score points, and not crash. It’s not clear if he will keep his seat after the British Grand Prix in July.

What did the drivers make of the new F1 movie?

The Formula 1 drivers were invited to a private screening of the new F1 movie on the Wednesday of the Monaco GP, just before it comes out to the public at the end of June. No group knows more about F1 than the 18 drivers who watched it. A lot of the drivers even appear briefly in the film. So, what did they make of it?

A Monaco moment to remember

Peter Bonnington and Andrew Shovlin re-watch Michael Schumacher’s amazing final lap in 2012 qualifying. A grid penalty meant he didn’t start on pole, but the lap is still one of the best from the seven-time world champion in Monaco. This moment definitely brings back some special memories, not just for the team but for fans who remember the magic Schumacher could create behind the wheel.
