Oscar Piastri continued the streak of pole sitters failing to win in Miami after wrestling the lead from Max Verstappen and taking the checkered flag
Bad weather cancelled the F1 Academy race earlier in the day, but the F1 schedule carried on. He's what happened in the 2025 edition of the Miami Grand Prix:
- The lights went out on the starting grid despite rumors of rain. A yellow flag and ultimately a virtual safety car were quickly called, however, after Liam Lawson collided with Jack Doohan. Lawson was OK, but Jack's Alpine was stopped and retired
- Attention during the first quarter of the race was focused on the front of the pack. Race leader Max Verstappen held off Oscar Piastri lap after lap but the McLaren was too quick. Then it was Lando Norris' turn, except the Brit struggled for quite some time to make the pass. Verstappen, who reported brake issues, was unable to hold the lead and let Lando pass
- Ollie Bearman brought out the virtual safety car on lap 29 after his power unit died. The VSC enabled George Russell to pit and still come out ahead of Verstappen
- Gabriel Bortoleto reported engine issues while Bearman was stalled on track. At first the Brazilian driver kept going, but on lap 33 he brought out another virtual safety car when his engine died
- Lewis Hamilton was frustrated with his team for their strategy call approaching lap 40. The team instructed the seven-time world champion to stay behind Charles Leclerc and use DRS to hold off Carlos Sainz who was chasing the pair. After pushback, Ferrari instructed Charles to swap positions and Hamilton surged ahead on his medium tires
- Liam Lawson retired his Racing Bulls car on 40 laps after trailing nearly half a minute behind the car ahead
- Yuki Tsunoda received a 5-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane
- With just 5 laps to go Ferrari reversed the team orders and put Charles Leclerc on hard tires back ahead of Hamilton. Hamilton mocked the decision when told his gap ahead of Carlos Sainz, sarcastically asking if he should let Sainz through as well
- Oscar Piastri continued the streak of pole sitters failing to win in Miami after wrestling the lead from Max Verstappen and taking the checkered flag. It also marks the Australian driver's third win in a row and McLaren's first time that's happened since 1998
