He began competitive racing in the United States in 2001, then moved to Europe in 2008 to compete in junior single-seater championships, not Formula 1 directly. Rossi raced in GP2 Series in 2013, 2014, and 2015, which opened doors to Formula 1. He later returned to the United States in 2016 to join Andretti Autosport’s IndyCar program.

In 2016, he joined Andretti Autosport’s IndyCar program, partnered with Bryan Herta Autosport. His IndyCar debut came that same year, and he quickly adjusted to ovals, street circuits, and fuel-saving race strategies.

Alexander Rossi’s defining moment came on May 29, 2016, when he won the Indianapolis 500 as a rookie by stretching fuel over the final laps. He won multiple IndyCar races between 2017 and 2019, finished second in the 2018 IndyCar championship, and third in 2019. 

In January 2021, Rossi won the Rolex 24 at Daytona overall with Wayne Taylor Racing, and became an overall endurance race winner. He later moved to Arrow McLaren in 2023, and continued to compete at the front of the IndyCar field. It was announced at the end of the 2024 season that Alexander would be driving for Ed Carpenter racing for the 2025 season.
