Robert Shwartzman is an Israeli-Russian racing driver known for his success in Formula 3 and Formula 2 before moving into Formula 1 reserve duties and later IndyCar. He gained major attention in 2019 after winning the FIA Formula 3 Championship in his rookie season. 

He then moved up to Formula 2 in 2020 and became one of the strongest drivers in the series, finishing second overall in 2021. During this period, he also worked closely with Ferrari through testing and development duties, later earning a role as a reserve driver.

After his time in European single-seaters, he shifted his focus toward American racing and entered the IndyCar ladder, eventually reaching IndyCar competition.

Robert Shwartzman was born on September 16, 1999, in Tel Aviv, Israel to Russian parents. His family later moved to Saint Petersburg, Russia, where he spent much of his early childhood. 

He started karting at a very young age and quickly became a standout talent, winning races across Italy and other European circuits. In April 2020, Shwartzman faced a personal tragedy when his father passed away due to COVID-19 complications, during the same period he competed in Formula 2.

Robert Shwartzman began his single-seater career in 2014 in Italian Formula 4. He later gained more experience in junior championships and achieved a major breakthrough in 2018 after winning the Toyota Racing Series title in New Zealand. 

In 2019, he joined FIA Formula 3 and won the championship in his rookie season. That result earned him a promotion to Formula 2 in 2020, where he won races and quickly established himself as a title contender. 

By 2021, he finished second in the Formula 2 standings and also began taking part in Formula 1 testing work. His strong performances later led to a reserve driver role connected to Ferrari.

How did Robert Shwartzman get to IndyCar?

After finishing second in Formula 2 in 2021, Robert Shwartzman pushed for a full-time Formula 1 seat but did not secure one. Instead, he stayed with Ferrari as a reserve driver in 2022 and 2023. He also took part in Formula 1 testing, including sessions in Abu Dhabi.

By 2023, Shwartzman began looking beyond the Formula 1 ladder and turned his attention to American open-wheel racing. He entered Indy NXT to gain experience on U.S. circuits and prepare for oval racing. His adaptation impressed teams, and in 2024, he earned his move into the IndyCar Series, starting the next stage of his career in the United States.

One of the biggest early moments of Robert Shwartzman’s career came in May 2019, when he won on his FIA Formula 3 debut in Barcelona. Another key highlight came on July 5, 2020, when he claimed victory in the Formula 2 feature race at Spielberg in Austria

He continued that momentum in 2021, adding major wins at Monaco and Baku, which kept him in the Formula 2 title fight. Later that year, his Ferrari Formula 1 test in Abu Dhabi further boosted his reputation and confirmed his standing as one of Ferrari’s trusted young drivers.

Another notable moment would be when Robert Shwartzman claimed the 2025 Indianapolis 500 pole position as a rookie driving for Prema.
