Friday at Suzuka added some intrigue at the top and clarity in the Formula 1 midfield.
McLaren absolutely looks like it has caught Ferrari on outright pace, and that matters. Oscar Piastri topped FP2 for McLaren, but the bigger picture still points to Mercedes as the safest premium team for the Japanese Grand Prix.
McLaren doesn’t suddenly become an easy F1 Fantasy buy, given the cost and budget gains available elsewhere. Still, Ferrari no longer feels locked into that clear number 2 spot behind Mercedes. Piastri’s lap, Russell’s own admission that McLaren’s speed was a surprise, and the data all say the same thing: McLaren is in the fight now.
For F1 Fantasy, though, the answer is less complicated. The playable teams and drivers are pretty clear after Friday. In the premium tier, it’s Mercedes and Ferrari constructors and drivers. In the budget tier, it’s Haas, Racing Bulls, and Franco Colapinto. That’s where the value and budget gains continue to live. Arvid Lindblad lost almost all of FP2 to a gearbox issue after barely running in FP1. So Haas gets the nod over Racing Bulls right now, but both teams remain viable plays for budget and points.
The Breakdown: Mercedes Still Leads, but McLaren Changed the Conversation
FP2 saw Piastri first, Antonelli second, and Russell third. Mercedes went 1-2 in FP1, then backed it up by running right behind Piastri in FP2. Russell said McLaren’s pace was “a little bit of a surprise,” but he also pointed to energy deployment as an area Mercedes expects to clean up quickly overnight.
Mercedes still believes there is more lap time in the car. Race pace data also backed Mercedes as the top team in the qualifying simulation by roughly a tenth over McLaren, with the race-pace gap closer to a quarter-second. So another Mercedes 1-2 seems likely.
McLaren is now a real threat to Ferrari, but McLaren still is not the clean F1 Fantasy play unless you are playing the Limitless chip. Piastri, specifically, makes sense as the fifth driver because the pace is real, and Max Verstappen continues to look uncomfortable in his Red Bull. As far as the other McLaren, Norris called it a “pretty bad day” and said the pace was there for Piastri, not for him.
Ferrari is still likely in the podium fight and most likely your premium constructor play. But Ferrari no longer gets the benefit of feeling untouchable as the second constructor slot.
The Price Watch: Premium Debate Up Top, Value is Simpler Down Low
The debate this weekend is whether you run two Tier A drivers or constructors. The “meta” lineup featuring Mercedes and Ferrari, with either Antonelli or a Ferrari driver, is the likely outcome at Miami. Do you move to that lineup now (if you can), or stick with Ferrari and Hass/Racing Bulls for the budget gains for one more week?
That matters when setting your Japan lineup. If you build yourself into a corner now, you may make the move harder in a few weeks. So even for a single-race mindset, Japan roster construction should be done with one eye forward to the Miami GP.
Mercedes and Ferrari remain the premium core. Russell remains the betting market favorite for qualifying and the race, while Antonelli sits right behind him. Ferrari is the next clear favorite, but McLaren has improved and closed the gap significantly.
At the budget end, it’s easier.
Haas and Racing Bulls remain the clear budget teams to target, but Haas gets the edge for this weekend. Lindblad’s lost running matters, especially on a track like Suzuka, where confidence means everything. Haas, meanwhile, had both Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon in a solid spot Friday, and the team continues to sit in that useful fantasy window where overtakes and points make them a great play.
Colapinto also stays in play as an individual budget option. While Alpine is still behind Haas and Racing Bulls, Colapinto can be a good play to round out your lineups if you can’t afford both Haas drivers.
Under the Radar: Ferrari Still Makes Sense
McLaren catching Ferrari obviously matters, especially on the track, but for fantasy purposes, Ferrari is still the obvious play.
Lewis Hamilton said Friday that the Ferrari didn’t feel massively different from last year at Suzuka, though he also believed the team could find more overnight. Ferrari looks to be third in both qualifying and race simulations. Race pace is more competitive, so with the cost savings to Mercedes and McLaren, they are still safe. Ferrari drivers may be more appealing than the Ferrari constructor itself, whether it's Leclerc or Hamilton as your second Tier A driver.
If you are running a team with Ferrari, Racing Bulls, and George Russell, you can afford to play Leclerc. If you choose to go triple-Haas with Ferrari and Antonelli, maybe Hamilton is your second Tier A.
Pick of the Week: Kimi Antonelli
The logic here is similar to China, and after a Kimi win, it makes even more sense. Russell may be the safest premium on the board, but Antonelli still looks like the smartest F1 Fantasy play as your 2X driver. Kimi has now proven not only that he is the favorite for P2, but if George slips up at all, he can bring the Mercedes home for a victory.
Kimi was second in FP2, right on Piastri’s pace, and Mercedes remains the strongest all-around car in both sessions. More importantly, Antonelli fits both the short-term and long-term puzzle looking ahead to Miami. He gives you access to the best car without paying Russell’s full premium, and he is the driver most likely to become part of meta builds featuring Mercedes and Ferrari.
That makes Japan feel like a natural time to make the move, or stick with Antonelli if you already have him on your team.
Mercedes is still the best car, and Ferrari is no longer bulletproof as the second team. McLaren has caught Ferrari enough to matter, and that should allow Mercedes to have another dominant weekend before the long break ahead of Miami.
