Brief overview of Earl Bamber’s career in motorsport

Earl Anderson Bamber is a New Zealand professional racing driver who currently competes in the IMSA SportsCar Championship for Cadillac Whelen and Cadillac Hertz Team Jota. He is also a factory driver for Corvette Racing and previously raced as a factory driver for Porsche.

Bamber began his racing career in karting and had already won his first title by 2002. He later moved through several racing categories, including Formula Renault, Formula BMW, GP2, endurance racing, Supercars, and NASCAR, becoming one of the most respected sports car and endurance racers in the world. 

He is a two-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, won the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship, and claimed the IMSA SportsCar Championship GTLM title in 2019. He is best known for his success with Porsche, where he won multiple Carrera Cup titles, a Porsche Supercup championship, and several endurance racing titles. 

In 2019, Bamber celebrated a major achievement with his newly formed team, Earl Bamber Motorsport, leading the team to victory at the Bathurst 12 Hour and giving Porsche its first overall win in the race with the Porsche 911 GT3 R. Today, Earl Bamber Motorsport competes across Asia, Australia, and Europe in the Porsche 911 GT3 R and Porsche 911 GT3 Cup categories.

Earl Bamber’s age, family and early life

Earl Bamber was born on July 9, 1990, in Whanganui, New Zealand, to Paul and Maureen Bamber. He grew up on a farm in the small settlement of Jerusalem along the Whanganui River, where he first learned how to drive.

Like many racing drivers, Bamber started karting at a young age. He began karting with his father and other family members when he was seven years old. Although he struggled at first, things eventually clicked for him, and he quickly began winning races.

At 12, he won the North Island Sprint Championships, and at 14, he claimed his first national title at the 2004 Sprint Kart Championship in Auckland. From there, he moved into Formula Ford racing.

How did Earl Bamber get to IMSA?

Earl Bamber reached IMSA through Porsche’s driver development and factory racing system. After progressing through several junior racing categories, he gained international attention with strong performances, including winning the New Zealand Grand Prix in 2010.

In 2013, he won the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia title, and in 2014, he became the first New Zealander to win the Porsche Supercup championship. These achievements earned him a place as a Porsche factory driver in 2015. 

Through Porsche, Bamber entered top-level endurance racing and competed in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with Porsche North America in the GTLM class. His success in IMSA and endurance racing later opened the door to factory roles with Cadillac and Corvette programs.

Notable moments and races in Earl Bamber’s career

In 2017, Earl Bamber enjoyed one of the biggest seasons of his endurance racing career, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans overall for the second time and securing the FIA World Endurance Championship title with Porsche. 

Before those achievements, Bamber had already established himself as one of New Zealand’s top motorsport talents. He won the Formula BMW Asia championship in 2006 and the New Zealand Grand Prix in 2010. In 2013, he claimed the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia title before winning both the Porsche Supercup championship and the Bathurst 12 Hour in 2014. 

In 2015, he became a Porsche factory driver and won Le Mans for the first time. A year later, he claimed another Bathurst 12 Hour win. In 2019, he won the IMSA GTLM championship before racing in the Thailand Super Series GT3 class in 2021. 

He then won the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2023 and joined Cadillac’s Hypercar program. As of 2026, Bamber still races for Cadillac in endurance events while also managing his own motorsport team.
