AJ Allmendinger is an American endurance racing driver who currently competes in NASCAR with Kaulig Racing and in the IMSA WeatherTech Championship with Acura Meyer Shank Racing. He began his racing career on BMX bikes before progressing through quarter-midget cars, go-karts, and open-wheel formula racing. 

His breakthrough came in 2006 when he finished third in the Champ Car championship of America's leading open-wheel drivers. Following this success, he transitioned to NASCAR, where he first competed for Team Red Bull before racing for several other teams. 

Away from NASCAR, Allmendinger has raced regularly in IMSA and has competed in the Rolex 24 at Daytona many times with Meyer Shank Racing. As of 2026, he races full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series with Kaulig Racing and continues to compete in selected IMSA endurance events.

AJ Allmendinger’s age, family and early life

Anthony James Allmendinger was born on December 16, 1981, in Santa Clara, California. He was raised in Los Gatos in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he developed a passion for motorsport from a young age. 

He started racing on BMX bikes at the age of five before moving into quarter-midget racing on oval tracks at eight. A few years later, he switched to karting and won two International Kart Federation Grand National championships. 

His karting success led him into formula racing. In 2001, he competed in the Formula Dodge National Championship, and in 2002, he won the Barber Dodge championship. A year later, he won the Champ Car Atlantic Championship with seven victories and nine pole positions, earning a move into top-level American open-wheel racing.

How did AJ Allmendinger get to NASCAR?

A.J. Allmendinger started his NASCAR career with Red Bull Racing in late 2006. The move from open-wheel racing to stock cars wasn't easy, and after struggling to qualify for races, he was released by the team in 2008. He bounced back with Richard Petty Motorsports, where he raced from 2009 to 2011. 

During that time, he finished third in the 2009 Daytona 500 and recorded his best points finishes in the Cup Series. Those performances earned him a move to Penske Racing in 2012, but his season ended early after he received an indefinite suspension following a failed drug test. 

Allmendinger returned in 2013 and slowly rebuilt his NASCAR career. Penske Racing brought him back for selected races, and he won two Xfinity Series races before joining JTG Daugherty Racing full-time, where he raced through 2018. He joined Kaulig Racing as a part-time Xfinity Series driver in 2019 and won at the Charlotte Roval that season. 

In 2020, he claimed his first NASCAR victory on an oval at Atlanta. A year later, Kaulig Racing gave him a full-time Xfinity ride and a part-time Cup Series schedule. He won multiple Xfinity races and gave the team its first Cup Series victory at Indianapolis. In August 2024, Kaulig Racing announced that Allmendinger would return to full-time Cup competition in 2025.

How did AJ Allmendinger get to IMSA?

A.J. Allmendinger made his IMSA debut in 2006 after team owner Mike Shank invited him to race for Michael Shank Racing in the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Shank had been impressed by Allmendinger's performances in open-wheel racing and offered him the opportunity to race in endurance events.

Although NASCAR remained his main focus, Allmendinger returned to Michael Shank Racing for major endurance races, especially the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Between 2006 and 2021, he made regular appearances in the event and became one of the team's most familiar drivers.

One of A.J. Allmendinger's biggest career moments came in 2006 when he won three consecutive Champ Car races at Portland, Cleveland, and Toronto. That same year, he also made his NASCAR national series debut. 

In 2012, Allmendinger won the Rolex 24 at Daytona, and in 2014, he claimed his first NASCAR Cup Series victory at Watkins Glen. In 2019, he won the Xfinity Series race at the Charlotte Roval. A year later, he earned his first NASCAR victory on an oval at Atlanta.

In 2021, he gave Kaulig Racing its first Cup Series win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course. He also won five Xfinity Series races and reached the Championship 4.
