Laurens Vanthoor is a Belgian endurance racing driver who competes for Porsche Penske Motorsport in IMSA competition. He began karting in 2002 and quickly became one of Belgium’s top young talents, winning major karting titles by 2005.

Vanthoor later moved into Formula 3 before shifting his focus to GT and endurance racing. He became an Audi factory driver and later joined Porsche in 2017. Across his career, he has earned major victories in events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. As of 2026, he remains one of Porsche’s leading endurance drivers.

Laurens Vanthoor’s age, family and early life

Laurens Vanthoor was born on May 8, 1991, in Hasselt. He developed an interest in motorsport at a young age and spent much of his childhood in karting. His younger brother, Dries Vanthoor, also became a professional racing driver. 

By 2005, Vanthoor had already won the French and Belgian ICA-J karting championships and finished fourth in the European Championship. Those early results established him as one of the top young karting talents in Europe.

How did Laurens Vanthoor get to IMSA?

Laurens Vanthoor moved from karting into Formula 3 in 2008 and won the German Formula 3 Championship in 2009. He later raced in the Formula 3 Euro Series before changing direction toward GT racing.

In 2012, he joined Audi and quickly became one of the company’s leading GT drivers. Then in late 2016, he signed with Porsche as a factory driver. A year later, he entered IMSA in the Porsche 911 RSR program.

Vanthoor earned his first IMSA win at Mid-Ohio in 2018. He later won the IMSA GTLM title in 2019 and the IMSA GTD championship in 2021. By 2023, he had joined Porsche’s Hypercar program in the FIA World Endurance Championship before returning to IMSA competition with Porsche Penske Motorsport.

Notable moments and races in Laurens Vanthoor’s career

One of the biggest moments of Laurens Vanthoor’s career came in 2024 when he won the FIA World Endurance Championship Hypercar title with Porsche Penske Motorsport. Before that success, Vanthoor had already built a strong reputation in GT and endurance racing. After winning the German Formula 3 Championship in 2009, he moved into GT racing and enjoyed major success with Audi. 

Between 2013 and 2016, he won the FIA GT Series, the Blancpain GT Series, the 24 Hours of Spa, the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, the FIA GT World Cup, and the Intercontinental GT Challenge.

In 2017, he joined Porsche and entered IMSA competition. A year later, he won the GTE Pro class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He later claimed the IMSA GTLM title in 2019 and the IMSA GTD championship in 2021. Another major achievement came in 2025 when Vanthoor won the 24 Hours of Daytona. As of 2026, he continues racing for Porsche Penske Motorsport in both IMSA and the FIA World Endurance Championship.
