Brief overview of Marcus Ericsson’s career in motorsport

Marcus Ericsson is a Swedish racing driver best known for his career in IndyCar and his victory at the Indianapolis 500. Ericsson has also raced in Formula BMW, Japanese Formula 3, and in the GP2 Series, which played a key role in his move into Formula 1.

He raced in Formula 1 from 2014 to 2018, driving for teams like Caterham and Sauber. Following his time in Formula 1, Ericsson moved to the IndyCar Series in 2019, where he gradually established himself as a consistent front-runner. He currently races with the Andretti Global team in IndyCar.

Marcus Ericsson has also expressed a passion for endurance racing where he has competed in IMSA, taking part in the 24 Hours of Daytona on more than one occasion.

Marcus Ericsson was born on September 2, 1990, in Kumla, Sweden. He grew up in a family that loved racing, and his younger brother Hampus also followed in his footsteps to become a race car driver. 

Marcus started karting as a child at the age of nine and progressed through Sweden’s junior racing scene. His father, Tomas, supported his early career and helped him get his first kart. Marcus lived in Sweden during his early racing career until he began competing internationally. He now lives in Indianapolis, Indiana, while competing in IndyCar

How did Marcus Ericsson get to IndyCar?

After competing in GP2 and then spending four seasons in Formula 1 from 2014 to 2018, he signed with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and began racing full-time in the IndyCar Series in 2019. 

His background in open-wheel racing helped him adapt quickly to IndyCar, and in 2024, he joined Andretti Global, one of the top teams in the series.

Ericsson scored his first IndyCar podium at the Detroit Grand Prix in his rookie year in 2019, a result that helped earn him a move to Chip Ganassi Racing for the following season.

His biggest moment came in May 2022 when he won the Indianapolis 500, one of the biggest races in world motorsport. 

Winning this race made Marcus one of the few Swedish drivers to win the Indy 500. He also won races in St. Petersburg and Nashville and regularly finished inside the top six of the championship standings across multiple seasons. 

In 2025, Marcus finished second in the Indianapolis 500 but was later disqualified due to a technical violation, ending what had initially been another strong result.
