Formula 1 weekends at the track deliver an unforgettable experience every time. From the roar of the cars racing by to an up-close glimpse of your favorite driver, the race weekend atmosphere is a feeling that simply cannot be replicated from home. You just have to remember to pack a poncho or sunscreen so you never miss a moment!
To make sure that you’re prepared to make the most of your race weekend experience, we’ve put together this comprehensive guide on the bag policy and other general rules when attending a Formula 1 grand prix. Although each and every track has their own set up rules you must abide by, there is a general standard of what you can or can’t bring. Keep these factors top of mind when packing and it will make your life a lot easier.
Check the Specific Circuit's Bag Policy
This is the most critical piece of advice. Do not rely on the rules from a race you attended last year, or even a race in a different country this year.
Each circuit should have an FAQ or Venue Policies page where you can find specific details on the rules and regulations that pertain to that specific track. Policies can change year-to-year so while we’re providing you with a general overview of what you can expect, it is imperative to check the official sites beforehand to ensure a seamless race weekend!
General Bag Size and Type Restrictions
Although precise dimensions vary, the universal guideline for F1 events is: travel light and small.
Typically Allowed
- Small bags
- Small clutch bags, fanny packs and waist bags (typically max 4.5” x 6.5”)
- Backpacks
- In some venues, small to medium backpacks are allowed (up to 12” x 12” x 20”)
- NOTE: Many U.S. races (Miami and Las Vegas) enforce a clear bag policy, often limiting clear bags or totes to 12” x 6” x 12”.
Restricted/Prohibited
- Large sports bags such as duffel bags
- Luggage
- Computer bags
A good rule of thumb is that you can generally NOT bring a big that would not comfortably fit under a seat.
Tip: If your bag is small enough to be considered a "clutch" or "fanny pack," it often doesn't need to be clear, even at venues with strict clear bag policies.
Mandatory Security Screening
Regardless of the venue, all people and bags are subject to security screening.
- Be prepared to open all compartments and remove items upon request.
- Security staff often use X-ray machines or hand searches to check contents.
- Keeping your bag light and organized will significantly speed up your entry process.
Prohibited Items
The following items are almost universally banned at all Formula 1 circuits worldwide for security reasons:
- Weapons & Dangerous Items
- Knives, firearms, ammunition, pepper spray, personal protection sprays, smoke canisters, or fireworks.
- Containers
- Glass containers, metal thermoses, ice chests, or coolers (small, soft-sided coolers may sometimes be allowed, but check first).
- Alcohol & Illegal Substances
- Outside alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs.
- Hazards/Nuisances
- Drones, laser pointers, whistles, vuvuzelas, or air horns.
- Aerosols
- Aerosol cans (including spray sunscreen or mace) are often banned. Choose lotion or solid stick sunscreen instead.
- Video/Photo Equipment
- Professional camera equipment (e.g., large detachable lenses, tripods, monopods) may be restricted, though personal, compact cameras are usually fine.
Essential Items You Can Usually Bring (In an Approved Bag)

Most circuits allow these essential items, but they will be searched:
- Water Bottle
- Water bottles must be EMPTY upon entry
- Plastic or silicone reusable bottles are best
- Metal or glass bottles are often prohibited
- Note: Some circuits may confiscate the lid/cap to your single-use water bottle if it is full
- Sunscreen
- Non-aerosol (lotion or stick) and in a plastic bottle only
- Rain Gear
- Small, handheld umbrella or a foldable rain poncho/jacket
- Note: When using an umbrella, make sure you are aware of your surroundings and other spectators beside you and avoid umbrellas with pointed tips
- Miscellaneous items
- Collapsible chairs (Especially for general admission)
- Blankets
- Earplugs
- Binoculars
- Electronics
- Portable phone charger/power banks
- Portable fans
- Note: Check circuit rules for maximum power bank sizes
