Reviewing Grandstand 1 at the Canadian Grand Prix

Whether they’re along the start-finish straight or the pit lane, some of the most defining moments of a Formula 1 weekend unfold directly in front of Grandstand 1 at the Canadian Grand Prix. It is a vantage point that captures both the spontaneous spectacle of cars battling at top speeds, and the rehearsed routines of pit crews tending to cars in their garages.

With this being the first Formula 1 Grand Prix I ever attended in-person, Grandstand 1 provided the ideal introduction to Formula 1 live. It offered a complete picture of what you get when you buy a grandstand ticket, and what makes this section of Circuit Gilles Villeneuve so popular. Keep reading for my full experience and review.

The View From Grandstand 1

The primary thing that stood out about Grandstand 1 is just how connected it feels to the inner workings of a Formula 1 race weekend.

Unlike other grandstands positioned around this circuit with views of chicanes, braking zones, and even straightaways, Grandstand 1is situated along the start-finish straight directly across from the team garages. It therefore offers a perspective that combines the sport’s operational side with some of its most decisive race moments beyond just the cars on-track. You can watch teams prepare for sessions and drivers like Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli climb behind the wheel. You can also see the race start, pitstops, safety car restarts, and the checkered flag wave directly in front of you. This grandstand provides a view that feels closely tied to how a Grand Prix is actually won and lost.

While the view itself is impressive, what stood out most was the sensory experience. Every launch from the pit lane sent engine noise echoing through the grandstand, while the smell of fuel and hot rubber lingered in the air throughout the session. It was a constant reminder that Formula 1 is far more intense in person than it appears on a screen.

Because Grandstand 1 is focused on the pit lane and start-finish straight, fans only see a relatively small portion of the 2.71 mi (4.36 km) circuit. Much of the action through the circuit's corners and chicanes unfolds out of sight. Thankfully, though you have finite on-track visibility, you make up for it with quality infrastructure in the form of three large video screens positioned opposite the grandstand. These are best viewed from seats in the middle and on either ends.Track commentary comes through loud and clear throughout the grandstand and is broadcast in a mix of English and French.

Grandstand 1 strikes a nice balance between comfort and practicality. The numbered seats include backrests, making long sessions significantly more comfortable than in bleacher-style grandstands or General Admission. The one downside of this grandstand is a lack of protection from the weather, as the grandstand is entirely uncovered. Whether you're dealing with intense sun or sudden rain showers, you'll be exposed to the elements for the full duration of your race weekend.

The Atmosphere

Another thing that stood out to me was the grandstand’s atmosphere.

Despite thousands of people sharing the same seating section, the environment remained welcoming and relaxed. Strangers offered to take photos for one another, applauded drivers as they exited the pit lane, reacted to quick lap times, and celebrated standout performances regardless of team allegiance. They even playfully poked fun at each other, like when a fan nearby pulled out the food they brought to the circuit… a whole rotisserie chicken! As my first Formula 1 experience, it was exactly the kind of atmosphere I was hoping for.

Exploring the Circuit Between Sessions

One unexpected benefit of Grandstand 1 was how much of the circuit I experienced between sessions. While the grandstand is a considerable walk from the entrances, its location places it within easy reach of many of the circuit's other attractions and viewing areas.

Like other grandstand ticket holders, I still had access to the full circuit grounds, but Grandstand 1 felt well-positioned for exploring between sessions rather than being isolated at one end of the venue. Whether heading toward fan zones, food vendors, merchandise stands, or different viewing areas, I could easily incorporate other parts of the circuit into my day, including stopping at various GA viewing spots to take in the on-track action from different perspectives. As a result, I experienced far more of Circuit Gilles Villeneuve than I might have otherwise, making the weekend feel even more immersive.

Another thing I explored were the support paddocks. Formula 2 and F1 Academy teams could be seen preparing cars in their garages, and there were opportunities to get surprisingly close to the action. I spotted 2025 F1 Academy Champion Doriane Pin, and event had the chance to speak with Mathilda Paatz of Prema Racing representing Aston Martin.

Just one note: fans hoping to see the Formula 2 machinery up close may want to visit the garages earlier in the day, before crowds build up, as the area is more restricted and harder to view than the F1 Academy paddock. I went at 8:30am and caught the cars before they went out on track.

Food, Facilities, and Fan Amenities

One of Grandstand 1's practical advantages is its proximity to essential amenities. Food vendors, drink stands, water refill stations, and portable washrooms were all located within a short walk of the grandstand, making it easy to access what I needed without missing significant on-track action.

Water refill stations are conveniently located around the track and right beside the grandstand, and are well worth using. I regularly topped up my water bottle between sessions. Portable washrooms were also conveniently located nearby. While basic in nature, I rarely encountered significant queues.

For those looking for something to eat, a variety of food and drink options were available within the surrounding area. As expected for a major international sporting event, prices were on the expensive side, with a Heineken beer costing $12 ($18 CAD).

Value and Final Verdict

As a first Formula 1 experience, Grandstand 1 proved to be an excellent introduction to the Canadian Grand Prix and attending F1 races in-person as a whole.

The grandstand’s location gives you a view of everything happening along the pit lane and start-finish straight: teams preparing cars, drivers climbing into the cockpit, the race start and finish, and everything in between. Combining this with the comfort of an assigned seat, screens, and clear commentary, it creates an experience that feels distinctly Formula 1, offering both quality and proximity to the sport.

The one drawback to be aware of is that if you’re looking to see more wheel-to-wheel battles, then you may prefer grandstands positioned around the circuit’s heavier braking zones.

And again, perhaps the biggest surprise was discovering that the grandstand ticket and the broader circuit experience compliment each other perfectly. The flexibility to explore GA areas and support paddocks between sessions, before returning to a reserved seat at the center of the on-track action, delivered the best of both worlds.

At the end of the day, a Grandstand 1 ticket was worth it for such a memorable experience, one that is just as likely to send you to bed with the same smile I fell asleep with on my face.
