Reviewing the Lando Norris Grandstand at the British GP: An F1 Fan’s Firsthand Experience

Attending the British Grand Prix at Silverstone was a weekend Jacob Bangs and his family will never forget. Not only was London buzzing with Formula 1 and Wimbledon taking over, but the trackside energy was palpable, with cars roaring by and so much to see and do and with music, food, and entertainment  covering nearly every corner of the circuit. It was such a fun, frantic day that his entire family—dad, brother, mother, and sister!—left avid F1 fans who now regularly keep up with the sport. In fact, the Bangs family group chat has lit up with messages every Sunday since.

So, what made Jacob’s experience one for the ages and how can his trip help you plan one just as memorable? This guide will help you do just that.

The Lando Norris Grandstand: Seating with a Vibe

Let’s start with what the Lando Norris Grandstand is: an uncovered but numbered grandstand located at Stowe corner on turn 15, at the end of the Hanger straight . Unlike more traditional ‘show up and sit patiently’ grandstands, the Lando Norris Grandstand at Silverstone plays into the British driver’s character, with fans decked out in special t-shirts and music riling everyone up into an exciting, high-energy race-day mood. Jacob described the atmosphere as “very social,” adding that “getting people to take photos was very easy,” which made the environment feel friendly and communal.

The view was a major highlight, offering sightlines through the Chapel chicane and down the Hanger Straight toward Stowe Corner, one of the circuit’s key overtaking zones. That year, action unfolded throughout the field, including a thrilling battle for the lead that sent the crowd into an uproar, before Lewis Hamilton ultimately made a decisive overtake on Lando Norris to secure the win.

Large screens were clearly visible, and a race radio proved to be an affordable and worthwhile upgrade for following the action more closely. Facilities were also well managed, with clean bathrooms and only moderate lines.

Sitting in this section as a Red Bull fan added an extra layer of fun for Jacob, with the sea of passionate McLaren fans playfully teasing him. “I’m the opposite,” Jacob joked about how he stood out from everyone cheering for Lando, but emphasized that “it was all in good fun,” reinforcing the positive spirit of the grandstand.

So Much to See, Eat, Do, and Discover Around the Track

Beyond the racing itself, the entertainment options around the circuit felt endless. “There’s a lot to do and see,” Jacob said, referring to the hours leading up to the race. The drivers parade gave fans an early glimpse of their favorites, followed by a dramatic jet flyover that heightened suspense around the circuit. Jacob opted for a nachos hot dog—though he later wished he had tried something more traditionally European. Jack Daniel’s branded drinks were available throughout the venue, priced at around £6 (approximately $8 USD), adding to the social side of the experience. Food and drink options were easily accessible and although most were a splurge, some things were reasonably priced. While convenient, Jacob felt that “prices weren’t ridiculous but I would have liked to pay less,” a sentiment many racegoers can likely relate to.

Beyond Formula 1, the track remained lively with Formula 2 and Formula 3 sessions, live music from Kings of Leon, interactive sponsor zones, games, massive merchandise pop-ups, and even a mini museum with historical artifacts related to this legendary sport. Together, these elements made the pre-race hours feel as if they were flying by, ensuring there was never a dull moment before lights out. And, when it came to moments before lights out, Jacob highlighted that “we were glued to our seats,” not wanting to miss a moment of the on-track action!

Getting to and from the Circuit

Getting to and from Silverstone required an early start, as Jacob and his family stayed in London for the weekend. They boarded a bus in central London around 7am, that cost about £50 per person (approximately $68 USD) arriving at the circuit just before 9am. It is worth noting that as they approached the circuit, traffic was getting thicker, but fortunately the buses have a dedicated entrance to help mitigate traffic delays. It is recommended to take an earlier bus to avoid traffic and potentially miss any on track activities. Once inside the venue, it was about a 15-20 minute walk to the Lando Norris Grandstand. A manageable walk, although not ideal, especially with so many people.

After the race, crowds were just as heavy, but things always felt controlled. Jacob described the exit as “very busy—manageable—and organized,” adding that they “got back quicker than we got to the circuit,” which came as a pleasant surprise after a long day. The buses to and from London run consistently throughout the day which helps reduce stress around planning. By the time the race had wrapped up and they made it home, the day stretched from approximately 7am to 7pm.

Race Day Essentials for Silverstone

Packing the right essentials made a noticeable difference to Jacob’s overall experience. Picking up a plastic poncho ahead of the race is highly advised. “Keeping ponchos close by to throw on was a game changer, shoutout to my mom for the idea,” Jacob said. With how unpredictable and rapidly evolving the British weather can be coupled with the realization that most grandstands here are uncovered, having the right gear allowed Jacob and his family to weather (pun intended) the changing conditions without missing track action.

Bringing small snacks and water bottles helped to avoid long queues during peak periods, while a portable charger was essential for getting through a full day at the circuit—particularly for Jacob, who spent nearly 8 hours on-site before catching the bus home. These small preparations helped make a long race day far more comfortable and stress-free.

As for his final tip, he suggests investing in a race radio to follow along clearly. These radios can be found on-site throughout the walk between grandstands. Additionally, keep an eye on the weather forecast, as conditions can change quickly.

More Than a Race Weekend

Attending the 2024 British Grand Prix at Silverstone proved to be more than just a motorsport event; it became a shared experience that brought Jacob’s entire family closer to Formula 1. His sister developed a new appreciation for back-of-the-pack racers, while his family found themselves increasingly invested and up to date with the sport. From the electric atmosphere of the Lando Norris Grandstand itself, to the constant activity around the circuit, Silverstone delivered excitement both on and off track. Even as a fan of the rival team; Jacob found the event unforgettable, hammering home that being at an F1 race is about community above any single team or driver.

Jacob’s Verdict

Based on his experience, Jacob strongly recommends the Lando Norris Grandstand, particularly for McLaren fans, as the atmosphere and crowd’s energy made the race significantly more enjoyable. More broadly, Silverstone proved to be an excellent venue for McLaren, Mercedes, and Williams fans, with strong British representation and passion throughout the day.

Looking back, Jacob strongly recommends attending the full weekend. “Go all three days,” he said, explaining that he wishes he did to allow for fans to fully experience everything Silverstone has to offer. He also suggests taking time to “walk the track and see the podium,” something he wishes he had done. For anyone considering attending the British GP, Jacob’s experience shows that with the right planning, it can be a truly memorable and a worthwhile adventure.
