George Russell and Kimi Antonelli battled it out in both the Formula 1 Sprint and the Grand Prix races this weekend, but a mechanical related DNF means that Kimi Antonelli was able to reap the benefits of the Mercedes updates and bring home a whole host of F1 Fantasy points. There was plenty more action from the Canadian Grand Prix, as six drivers failed to finish the main race and multiple top teams had to take a -20 for DNF’s on their F1 Fantasy scorecards. Winners and losers below…
Winners
Ferrari
Sprint: P5 (Leclerc) and P6 (Hamilton)
Qualifying: P5 (Hamilton) and P8 (Leclerc)
Race: P2 (Hamilton) and P4 (Leclerc)
Ferrari initially looked like they might be on the backfoot coming into this weekend, but they ended up being the constructor that scored the second most F1 Fantasy points of the weekend with 67. While Mercedes had 69 F1 Fantasy points, the Silver Arrows were a full $6M more expensive, making Ferrari the better bang for your buck this weekend. Hamilton and Leclerc were able to gain a combined 7 places in the main Grand Prix, which added to their F1 Fantasy points total. Ferrari is also expected to be strong in Monaco, so players can feel confident in holding the Italian team.
Kimi Antonelli
Sprint: P2
Qualifying: P2
Race: P1
For the fourth Grand Prix in a row, Kimi Antonelli took home the biggest trophy by winning the feature race. The young Italian driver has been by far the standout of the F1 Fantasy season thus far, leading the field in points scored (254) and A-Tier drivers in budget gained ($1.5M). Despite some sketchy moments and plenty of wheelbanging with his teammate, both of which he admitted in his post-race interview, Antonelli also earned the highest F1 Fantasy point total with 59 from the weekend. That included 10 additional points for the fastest lap. He gained $0.6M in budget for his efforts.
Alpine
Sprint: P9 (Colapinto) and P20 (Gasly)
Qualifying: P10 (Colapinto) and P14 (Gasly)
Race: P6 (Colapinto) and P10 (Gasly)
Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly were both able to bring home championship points for Alpine this week by finishing the race in P6 and P10.They scored 46 F1 Fantasy points and earned a $0.6M price rise for their achievements. They were the third-highest scoring constructor over this weekend in F1 Fantasy, since McLaren and Red Bull were both plagued with issues with at least one driver. Alpine has steadily climbed to the top of the midfield and has collected big points by capitalizing on the mistakes of others.
Valtteri Bottas
Sprint: P17
Qualifying: P22
Race: P16
While Valtteri Bottas may have finished last in the race, he still finished, which was an accomplishment in itself at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He gained 5 positions in the Grand Prix and 4 in the Sprint to score 12 F1 Fantasy points overall and gain $0.6M in budget. 12 F1 Fantasy points was by far the most he’s earned in a weekend this season, and it was triple his previous highest F1 Fantasy score from Miami. In Monaco, Bottas could potentially be on the table as a budget building asset.
No Negative Users
For a second race in a row, rain threatened the weekend but never materialized. But also, for the second weekend in a row, there were plenty of driver and team issues and DNF’s even without the rain. The Sprint saw one DNF when Fernando Alonso had an issue with his chassis. That count jumped to six for the Feature Race, yet again including Alonso, who had an issue with his seat in the longer race. The chaos of the new regulations has added mechanical uncertainty back into the mix for teams and drivers, and F1 Fantasy players will be wishing they could reuse the No Negative chip soon.
Losers
McLaren
Sprint: P2 (Norris) and P4 (Piastri)
Qualifying: P3 (Norris) and P4 (Piastri)
Race: P11 (Piastri) and DNF (Norris)
McLaren brought the second half of a large upgrade package to Montreal, and throughout the Sprint and Qualifying it looked as though they would be a solid second force alongside Mercedes this weekend. However, it all started unraveling before the race began, when they were the only top team to start on intermediate tires on a dry track. Lando Norris eventually had to retire from the race after two pitstops and a mechanical issue, and Oscar Piastri was given a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with Alex Albon and was unable to fight his way back into the points. They finished as the lowest A-tier constructor with only 20 F1 Fantasy points.
George Russell
Sprint: P1
Qualifying: P1
Race: DNF
George Russell experienced the epic highs and lows of Formula 1 throughout this Canadian GP weekend. After winning the Sprint and qualifying on pole (his third in a row at this circuit), he spent the majority of his Grand Prix run locked in a scintillating wheel-to-wheel battle with teammate Kimi Antonelli. Despite the tense and close contact, it was a gearbox failure that ultimately took Russell out of the race. Russell ended the weekend with zero F1 Fantasy points and a $0.1M budget drop.
Alex Albon
Sprint: P19
Qualifying: P18
Race: DNF
The F1 Class of 2019 rookies all had a nightmare Grand Prix this weekend, but none worse than Alex Albon. His struggles started in FP1 when he crashed his Williams to avoid hitting a marmot on track, and they never seemed to cease from there. He wasn’t able to score championship points in the Sprint after missing Sprint Qualifying, and his main race came to an end after Oscar Piastri hit him. He ended the weekend with -11 F1 Fantasy points and a $0.6M price drop.
Fernando Alonso
Sprint: DNF
Qualifying: P19
Race: DNF
While many drivers DNF’d in the main race, Alonso stood singular as the only driver to unfortunately fail to complete both that and the Sprint. His weekend started poorly with a crash in SQ1, and he was then hampered with mechanical issues with his chassis and seat. He took home -28 F1 Fantasy points and a -$0.6M price change. Unfortunately, before this race he was a big target for budget builders, but the issues he faced in Canada will likely make him unplayable for a couple more weeks. Aston Martin is desperately in need of some upgrades both for reliability and performance.
Sergio Perez
Sprint: P14
Qualifying: P20
Race: DNF
The Mexican driver was able to earn Cadillac’s best on-track result yet with P11 in the Sprint race before dropping down to P14 after a penalty for pushing Liam Lawson off track. His weekend went from bad to worse with a mechanical DNF in the main race. Perez had been able to dodge reliability issues before this weekend and had actually gained over $1M in budget, but his DNF in Canada earned him -12 F1 Fantasy points for the weekend and a $0.6M price drop.
