Kimi Antonelli becomes the youngest pole sitter in any F1 format after besting both McLarens in Miami's sprint qualifying
We're official into the sprint portion of the Miami Grand Prix, kicking things off with the qualifying for sprint pole. Teams contended with a hot and very sunny circuit. Here's what happened:
- Jack Doohan, Yuki Tsunoda, and Ollie Bearman missed out on laps and that cost them SQ1 as all three were eliminited alongside Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll as well as Gabriel Bortoleto
- In his post-session debrief with Lawrence Barretto Yuki blamed his lap time on traffic, saying he was unable to put in a proper lap time
- Carlos Sainz had to bail out of his lap at turn 11 due to a major lockup. It cost him the lap and ultimately eliminated him from SQ2
- The three senior Stake, Alpine, and Kick drivers were all eliminated in SQ2. Isack Hadjar and Kimi Antonelli were the two rookies to make it into the final round
- Zak Brown's pit wall commentary ahead of SQ3: "Max and the two Mercedes look very strong, and as always shouldn't rule Ferrari out"
- 8 of 10 cars in SQ3 waited for the final minute to go for their sole flying lap of the session. They did it to try and extract slightly more from the track than George Russell and Max Verstappen who set lap times earlier
- Max Verstappen bested Lewis Hamilton but it was rookie Kimi Antonelli who put up a final lap time that not even Oscar Piastri or Lando Norris could beat. The Mercedes rookie became the youngest pole sitter in any race format in Formula 1 history, taking the record from the great Sebastian Vettel
