Austin Dillon is an American professional stock car driver who competes full time in the NASCAR Cup Series. He drives the iconic No. 3 car for Richard Childress Racing, one of the most recognizable numbers in NASCAR history. 

One of the biggest moments of his career came in 2018 when he won the Daytona 500. A year earlier, he secured victory at the Coca Cola 600, another of NASCAR’s major races. Before reaching the Cup Series, Dillon also found success in NASCAR’s lower divisions. 

He won the NASCAR Truck Series championship in 2011 and later captured the NASCAR Nationwide Series title in 2013, making him one of the few drivers to win championships in both series.

Austin Dillon’s age, family and early life

Austin Dillon was born on April 27, 1990, in Lewisville, North Carolina. He grew up in a family deeply connected to racing. His grandfather, Richard Childress, founded Richard Childress Racing in 1969, while his father, Mike Dillon, worked as both a driver and an executive within the organization. 

Racing also runs in the next generation of the family. His younger brother, Ty Dillon, competes in NASCAR as well. Dillon attended High Point University while continuing to develop his racing career. He began driving at 14 in dirt bandolero cars before moving into late model racing. 

By 2008, he was competing in the Camping World East Series, where he earned Rookie of the Year honors and recorded an early milestone in his professional career.

How did Austin Dillon get to NASCAR?

Austin Dillon made his NASCAR debut in the Truck Series in 2009, competing part time for Richard Childress Racing. The following year, he moved into full time competition and finished second in the championship standings. 

In 2011, Dillon won the Truck Series championship, which helped earn him a promotion to the Nationwide Series. He began racing full time in that series in 2012 and finished third in the standings during his rookie season. 

A year later, Dillon captured the 2013 Nationwide Series championship. After that success, he moved up to the NASCAR Cup Series and began full time competition in 2014, continuing the family connection with Richard Childress Racing.

Notable moments and races in Austin Dillon’s career

One of the biggest moments of Dillon’s Cup Series career came on May 29, 2017, when he earned his first Cup victory at the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The win was especially significant because it marked the first Cup victory for the famous No. 3 car since 2000. 

He followed that with an even bigger achievement in 2018 when he won the Daytona 500. Dillon took the lead on the final lap after a dramatic crash on the last turn, securing one of NASCAR’s most prestigious victories and earning a place in the 2018 playoffs. 

Another important win came in July 2020 at Texas Motor Speedway, which helped him qualify for the 2020 NASCAR playoffs. Over the years, Dillon has collected multiple Cup Series victories while driving for Richard Childress Racing.
