F1 Fantasy Formation Lap: Antonelli Answers Verstappen at Spa

Max Verstappen reminded Formula 1 on Friday that Red Bull still has plenty of speed.

Kimi Antonelli answered just a few hours later.

The Belgian Grand Prix has always been one of the most unpredictable stops on the calendar, and Spa-Francorchamps looks ready to deliver another wide-open weekend for the Championship and F1 Fantasy. Verstappen topped the opening practice session, Antonelli led FP2, Ferrari remained firmly in the fight, and McLaren quietly lingered close enough to make qualifying difficult to predict.

Still, Spa brings its own complications. Lando Norris will serve a 10-place grid penalty after qualifying, Isack Hadjar will start from the back because of multiple power unit changes, and one of Formula 1's best overtaking circuits often rewards drivers who begin deeper in the field.

Friday answered some questions and created a few more.

The Breakdown: Three Teams, One Fight

Silverstone belonged to Ferrari.

Spa doesn't belong to anyone, yet.

Verstappen wasted little time putting Red Bull on top in FP1 despite running an older rear wing, edging Lewis Hamilton by just 0.145 seconds while Charles Leclerc followed close. Hadjar continued his remarkable form this season, running less than five-hundredths behind.

Mercedes looked far less convincing in the morning.

Antonelli complained that the car felt edgy over one lap, George Russell never found a comfortable pace, and Ferrari appeared to have the advantage.

Then came the second session.

Antonelli responded with the fastest lap of FP2, becoming the only driver to dip below the 1:46 mark while Norris finished second and Verstappen third. Hamilton remained fourth, but Leclerc slipped to 11th after focusing more on race work than headline times.

Once again, Antonelli found another gear when conditions stabilized.

Russell's weekend remains harder to explain. He finished eighth in both sessions and never appeared capable of matching his teammate over a single lap. Mercedes still looks like one of the fastest cars over a race distance, but Antonelli is clearly carrying the F1 Fantasy weight.

McLaren quietly sits in the middle of the fight.

Oscar Piastri lost valuable running time in FP2 while repairs were made following a hydraulic issue in the morning session, but Norris finished second, showing pace to go with that 10-place grid penalty. Spa's long straights and overtaking opportunities mean he still projects to recover and score valuable points.

Red Bull presents the most interesting fantasy puzzle.

Verstappen led FP1 and remained third in FP2, looking quick throughout Friday. Hadjar finished fourth and fifth, so like Norris he’s showing pace to make use of his grid penalty. Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad both remained inside the top 11 across both sessions, another reminder that Racing Bulls continues delivering outstanding value as a Tier B constructor.

The Price Watch: Let the Budget Work

Buy: Mercedes

Sometimes consistency is the best investment.

Antonelli entered qualifying as the betting favorite and backed it up by leading FP2 after an unconvincing morning session. Mercedes also remains one of the safest constructor plays, with both cars showing strong long-run pace even if Russell hasn't found Antonelli's outright speed.

Mercedes has been the most consistent team all season with pace and reliability. The Mercedes and Ferrari pair remains the strongest for most F1 Fantasy lineups, while Racing Bulls offers enough value to accommodate multiple Tier A assets if you want to get creative or try to find some differential.

Sell: McLaren

This isn't about speed. McLaren has shown up on race days after tough practice sessions. It's about circumstance.

Norris’s 10-place grid penalty will hurt no matter how well he qualifies. Yes, overtaking will help, but he’s still likely looking at a best-possible finish of sixth. Piastri looked competitive but lost valuable track time after his hydraulic issue in FP1, leaving McLaren with more questions than Ferrari or Mercedes.

The pace is there, so is the risk.

At similar prices, Hamilton, Antonelli, and even Verstappen provide cleaner paths to big points this weekend.

Under the Radar: Racing Bulls

The Red Bull sister team has 93 F1 Fantasy points in the last two races, and continues to easily add $0.6M to the budget each week.

Lawson and Lindblad remain excellent budget options as drivers, as well. Both hovered around the top 10 throughout Friday. Racing Bulls remains one of the strongest value constructors in the game.

If you're chasing budget without sacrificing points, Racing Bulls remains the easiest answer.

Pick of the Week: Kimi Antonelli

Friday felt familiar. While Antonelli didn't dominate the entire day, he ended it on top.

Mercedes looked equal to the other teams in FP1 before Antonelli posted the fastest lap in FP2, finishing as the betting favorite for pole position. He continues leading the championship and once again appears capable of delivering the highest F1 Fantasy total of the weekend.

This is a circuit that favors the best drivers. Verstappen will challenge him. Hamilton and Ferrari look ready to fight. At the start of the weekend, I was prepared to pitch another driver because of this, but I am sticking with Kimi.

Because if you're looking for the safest premium driver entering qualifying, Antonelli remains the name to build around. At Spa, that makes him this week's clearest final takeaway.
