Buemi’s path to the World Endurance Championship began after his Formula 1 career concluded at the end of the 2011 season with Toro Rosso. Seeking a long-term role in top-level racing, he joined Toyota Gazoo Racing in 2012 as part of their LMP1 program based in Cologne, Germany.

That season introduced him to endurance events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France. The switch suited him almost immediately, and by 2014 he had already secured his first WEC world title.

He continued this success with additional Le Mans victories in 2019, 2020, and 2022.
