Why SailGP Is attracting celebrities and investors
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman became co-owners of Australia’s three-time champion SailGP team, while Anne Hathaway joined a female-led group to purchase Italy’s team. Kylian Mbappé, Sebastian Vettel, Deontay Wilder, and DeAndre Hopkins also bought stakes in other teams. SailGP’s F50 catamarans fly above water on hydrofoils at speeds over 100 km/h, with rigid wings that catch wind efficiently and propel boats faster than the wind. The league has 12 teams, nine- to twelve-minute races, and a regular season, which has made it profitable, attracted sponsors, drawn large crowds, and brought high-profile investors and celebrities to the sport.
