The second triple-header of the season wrapped up on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya with plenty of action. After locking out the front row in Qualifying, McLaren converted it into a 1-2 finish. Yet most of the action happened behind them as the final 10 laps of the race had everything from retirements, safety cars, on-track scraps and massive penalties.

Here is everything at the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix:

Pre-Race:

  • Lance Stroll withdrew from the Spanish Grand Prix after Qualifying, citing issues with his hand and wrist, which his medical team has said is likely related to his incident in 2023.
    • He will be undergoing medical procedures to address the problems.
    • Because Stroll already completed Qualifying, it was too late for a reserve driver to take his place for the race, as per the Sporting Regulations.
  • Red Bull opted to make changes to Yuki Tsunoda’s rear wing and set-up after Qualifying, sending Tsunoda to start from the pitlane.
    • Tsunoda started in the pitlane at the beginning of this triple-header in Imola, where he climbed to P10 to score a point.
  • The tire options for this race were C1, C2 and C3. These are the three hardest compounds, and the total opposite from what was used in the first two races of the European triple header.

Race Start:

  • The entire field chose to start the race on soft tires, bar from Tsunoda who started on the mediums from the pitlane.
  • Oscar Piastri got a fantastic launch at the start of the race to keep the lead.
  • His teammate, Lando Norris, was not as successful, as Max Verstappen got the best of him to split the McLarens.
  • Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton likewise had great starts to come out ahead of both Mercedes drivers.
  • Nico Hulkenberg climbed 5 spots on the opening lap to find himself in an incredible fight with home crowd favourite Fernando Alonso for points positions.

Race:

  • Alex Albon sustained damage to his front wing during the opening lap, forcing him to pit for a new nose on Lap 7.
  • After a couple of laps of racing each other, Ferrari gave the order for Hamilton and Leclerc to swap positions on Lap 10, allowing Leclerc to chase the top three.
  • Despite getting the upper hand on the race start, McLaren had the better pace, and Norris overtook him for P2 on Lap 13
  • Alonso went briefly off-track and into the gravel on Lap 14, but was able to recover.
  • After a series of pit stops from the top three, Verstappen found himself back in the lead of the race with Piastri and Norris hot on his tail.
  • Albon was forced to retire from the race after sustaining damage to his front wing yet again from a scrap with Liam Lawson on Lap 25.
    • Albon was given a 10-second time penalty for gaining a position off-track early in his battle with Lawson, which he served before retiring from the race.
  • Lap 25 also saw Piastri back in the lead as Verstappen went back into the pit, coming out in P4 behind Leclerc.
  • Verstappen’s Red Bull looked to have great pace through the middle of the race, as he put down lightning-fast lap times to get past Leclerc and close the gap on the two McLarens ahead of him.
  • Both Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto showed the speed of the Sauber in the straights, running in points positions through the second half of the race.
    • Bortoleto took a late pit stop on lap 51, tumbling him down from P10 to P17
  • The battle between Norris and Verstappen was briefly impeded by rookies Lawson and Oliver Bearman, who were a lap down from the
  • Kimi Antonelli went into the gravel on Lap 55, bringing out the Safety Car. Antonelli was okay.
  • Antonelli’s incident triggered a series of pit stops, with most of the front runners choosing to put on used softs, save for Verstappen, who was put on new hard tires.
    • Verstappen was clearly frustrated with this choice, and was the only driver to run the only driver to run the card compound during this grand prix
  • The safety car came back in at the end of Lap 60
  • Piastri drew the restart out as long as he could, with Norris creeping up behind him. In the end, Piastri maintained the lead.
  • Behind the McLarens drama unfolded, as Verstappen had a rear snap, causing him to swerve and opening up an opportunity for Leclerc to get past him for P3.
  • Verstappen also had a brush with George Russell on the race restart.
    • Verstappen was told to give his position to Russell after gaining an advantage off-track.
    • Verstappen initially maintained the position, banging wheels with Russell in a moment of significant contact. He eventually conceded the position, but was very clearly frustrated on the team radio about his situation.

Checkered Flag:

  • Piastri took his fifth win of the season in yet another relatively quiet run to the finish line.
  • Piastri led McLaren to another 1-2 race finish with Lando Norris claiming P2.
  • With a P3, Leclerc now has a two-race podium streak.
  • After overtaking  Hamilton’s Ferrari on Lap 65, Hulkenberg finished in P6, his best result of the season, and Sauber’s biggest points haul so far.
  • Alonso made it into the top 10 with an overtake on Lawson on the penultimate lap, finally scoring his first points of the season at his home race.

Post-Race:

  • Verstappen was given a 10-second penalty for the collision with Russell, dropping him from P5 to P10.
    • Verstappen has also received 3 penalty points for the incident, bringing him to a total 11
