The Mercedes vs. Ferrari Debate Continues

Kimi Antonelli F1 Fantasy

Kimi Antonelli's critical DNF at the Austrian Grand Prix landed the Italian rookie a three-place grid penalty for this weekend. Antonelli failed to finish three of the last five races and has only scored 19 points more than Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg on the season. During that same stretch, Mercedes recorded fantasy scores of 6, 9, 24, 87, and 19 - far below the expectations of F1 Fantasy strategists.

Ferrari, meanwhile, scored 178 more fantasy points than their title rivals in their last five race weekends. Lewis Hamilton looks to record his 10th win at Silverstone, a circuit where he finished on the podium in every race dating back to 2013. Ferrari's pit stop prowess and Hamilton's excellence at home gives Ferrari the early edge.

Mercedes fans, keep an eye on the weather. With temperatures expected to drop and rain forecasted for Sunday, the Silver Arrows could regain their from from Canada.

Cost Cap Roulette

Gabriel Bortoleto F1 Fantasy

Fernando Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg not only delivered $0.6M in Austria but they also set strong enough scores to continue adding value this weekend. Alonso needs -13 points for $0.6M while Hulkenberg needs -6 points to continue his hot streak. Gabriel Bortoleto's first top-10 finish sets him up for a -11 point target for a maximum price gain.

After falling off the fantasy radar for several weeks, Esteban Ocon's 20-point outing in Austria marks his second straight double-digit fantasy score. Ocon needs 0 points or more for a $0.6M price gain. His recent history at Silverstone deserves some caution: DNF, DNF, P16 in his last three British Grands Prix.

In an unlikely turn of events, all three Sauber assets will be popular this weekend. Sauber needs -44 for a $0.6M, the least among constructors once again, which opens up the budget to run a second premium driver.

Weather Outlook

  • Friday: 78°F/26°C, Partly Cloudy
  • Saturday: 71°F/22°C, Cloudy
  • Sunday: 68°F/20°C, 40% Chance of Rain

This circuit features a microclimate unlike most of the Formula 1 calendar. The forecast changed multiple times in the last 48 hours, with the current outlook for Sunday including a spot of rain. Temperatures will more closely resemble Canada than Austria, so keep an eye on Mercedes as they hope to rebound.

Right now, No Negative could be in the cards for chips and those triple McLaren teams may even consider Autopilot. Wait until the last possible moment on Saturday to select a chip since the weather could change a few more times.

Betting Lines

British GP betting lines

As always, the McLaren duo start the week with the best odds to win. George Russell and Charles Leclerc open at even odds, a sign that it's unclear whether Ferrari's strong performance in Austria outweighs the strengths of Mercedes in cooler temperatures.

After three straight DNFs, Alex Albon's opening line appears a bit generous. I'd take Fernando Alonso or the current P10 in the WDC, Nico Hulkenberg, as top 10 finishers over the Williams veteran.
