Piastri shows dominance in Belgium ahead of Verstappen | Belgian Grand Prix Sprint Qualifying Results 2025

Oscar Piastri showed dominance in Belgium, claiming the sprint pole ahead of Max Verstappen and his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris

Oscar Piastri topped FP1 at the iconic Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. The Red Bull of Max Verstappen and The McLaren of Lando Norris rounded out the top three, showing impressive pace in the one and only practice session of this Sprint race weekend. The drivers are gearing up for Sprint Qualifying, see what happened in the session and who looked strong on track:

SQ1

  • Right as SQ1 began, there was a pit lane incident involving Nico Hulkenberg and Liam Lawson
    • Hulkenberg was released early and cut off the Kiwi driver
    • The stewards announced that there will be no further investigation on this incident
  • Kimi Antonelli had a huge moment at Stavelot, putting his Mercedes car into the gravel and putting his lap time at risk
  • SQ1 saw a series of surprising eliminations with Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton both not making it through to the next round
    • After securing his first ever podium position in Formula 1, Nico Hulkenberg was unable to put his Sauber in a better position than P17
  • Hamilton went off track at the very last second, ruining his chances of making it to SQ2 and bringing out the yellow flag as the checkered flag was being waved, signalling the end of this session

SQ2

  • SQ2 was slightly delayed as the track had to be cleared from all of the gravel that Kimi Antonelli dragged onto the track in SQ1
  • Oscar Piastri had his lap time deleted for exceeding track limits at Radillion
    • He only had about three minutes left to set another fastest lap
  • Mercedes is having a tough weekend with Kimi Antonelli being eliminated in P20 and George Russell being eliminated in P13
  • Liam Lawson has having an impressive performance but just missed out on SQ3 by putting his Racing Bull in P11
  • Both of the Aston Martin drivers were eliminated in SQ2

SQ3

  • All ten drivers headed out on to track with only six minutes remianing in the session
  • Lando Norris was looking strong but was quickly replaced at the top by his teammate, Oscar Piastri
  • Max Verstappen had a very strong lap, putting his Red Bull in P2 behind the McLaren of Piastri
  • Carlos Sainz finishing in P6 behind Esteban Ocon
  • Gabriel Bortoleto rounded out the top ten with Pierre Gasly, Isack Hadjar and Ollie Bearman finishing in front of him
  • Oscar Piastri claimed pole position at the Circuit de Spa Francorchamps ahead of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris
