Just hours after wrapping up the sprint race, cars were back on track at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps for Qualifying ahead of tomorrow’s Belgian Grand Prix. Orange was the color to wear, as Lando Norris slammed down a stellar time for pole, with Oscar Piastri not far behind in P2.
Here is how it all went down:
Q1:
Mercedes found themselves under some pressure early in Q1; both Kimi Antonelli and George Russell were in the bottom five with seven minutes to go, forcing them to put on a fresh set of rubber for their second set of hot laps in the round. Russell was able to eke out more speed from the newer tires, while Antonelli continued to struggle.
The McLarens of Piastri and Norris continued to dominate, topping the timesheet by the end of the first 18 minutes. But it was Pierre Gasly who secured the fastest first sector of Q1, along with a spot in the top 15.
Meanwhile Lewis Hamilton jumped from the elimination zone into P7 only to have his time deleted for going over track limits. This put him into P15, and the seven-time world champion did not advance to Q2. This also meant that Gabrielle Bortoleto would join Nico Hulkenberg in Q2.
Franco Colapinto, Antonelli, Fernando Alonso, and Lance Stroll completed the bottom five, and did not advance.
Q2:
Q2 began similarly to the way Q1 ended, with Piastri and Norris firmly in the front of the field.
Charles Leclerc put down a solid lap to put him fourth overall in Q2, behind Max Verstappen, telling his team via radio that this was likely all he could get out of the car.
Further down the field, Oliver Bearman had a kick of oversteer during his first hot lap, going outside of the track and having his time deleted. This put him in a tight spot in the second half of the round, with only one shot to secure his place in the top 10.
It was unfortunately not enough, as both Esteban Ocon and Bearman failed to advance into the top 10. They were joined by Gasly, Hulkenberg, and Carlos Sainz.
Q3:
The final 12 minutes of Qualifying were quite the thrill.
The show was stolen once again by the two McLarens. Norris had a thrilling run to secure pole position, while Piastri was just 0.085s behind him in P2.
Leclerc managed to find a bit more time in his car to round out the top three.
After some major staff reshuffling, both Red Bull and VCARB were fully represented in Q3 for the first time this season, in a great start for new team principals Laurent Mekies and Alan Permane. Verstappen did the best out of the four drivers, finishing in P4. Yuki Tsunoda, who made it into Q3 for the first time since the Miami Grand Prix, stayed close to his teammate throughout the entire session, and finished in P7. The two VCARBs of Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson were not far behind him in P8 and P9.
