After three very dramatic practice sessions with lots of spins, slides and even some contact with the barriers, our drivers came back on track for the Canadian Grand Prix Qualifying.
The results from of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve set up a potentially dramatic Sunday, as George Russell took pole, with Max Verstappen lining up next to him on the front row in P2. Here is everything that happened during Qualifying at the Canadian Grand Prix:
Q1:
The first session of Qualifying kicked off with several drivers opting to run medium tires for. This included both the Alpines of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, as well as Kimi Antonelli and Fernando Alonso. About midway through the session, we saw Alonso top the time sheet on the C5 compound.
As the session went on, Alex Albon lost the engine cover of his Williams, red-flagging the session with 5:30 left on the clock. This sent everyone back to the pit while the debris on track was cleaned up. Albon’s car was able to be repaired, and he completed the session with no further issues.
By the end of Q1, the McLarens of Norris and Piastri topped the time sheets. Franco Colapinto found himself in the top 10, as did Albon. Meanwhile, Gabriel Bortoleto, Carlos Sainz, Lance Stroll, Liam Lawson and Gasly made up the bottom five, and did not advance to Q2.
Q2:
The second qualifying session saw a mix of soft and medium tires, as drivers switched compounds throughout the session.
Isack Hadjar eliminated his former teammate Yuki Tsunoda, who received a 10-place grid penalty for overtaking Oscar Piasri during a red flag. This means that Tsunoda will be starting P20 on Sunday, and marks another Q3 appearance for Hadjar.
Along with Tsunoda, Colapinto, Nico Hulkenberg, Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon were also eliminated.
Q3:
The final session, much like the first two, saw a mix of medium and soft tires. The medium proved to be the right call, as both Russell and Verstappen switched to the C5s for their lightning fast final laps, with George Russell ultimately beating out the Dutch driver to claim pole.
Note: After the session, Isack Hadjar received a 3-place grid penalty for impeding Carlos Sainz.
