Red Bull investigates McLaren’s unusual tire cooling strategy

Red Bull suspects McLaren may have illegal tire cooling methods and has started its own checks with thermal camera footage at pit stops. McLaren has dominated early in the season, with its cars providing stronger tire performance than rivals in both short runs and races. Red Bull reportedly observed McLaren’s brake drums cooler than others in hot races, which raised questions about possible water-based cooling, an idea Zak Brown mocked with a “tire water” bottle in Miami. McLaren credits its edge to downforce, balance, and technical design, and past FIA reviews found no violations of the rules.

Verstappen's engine may undermine gains from Miami floor upgrade

Red Bull is rolling out a three-phase upgrade package, with modifications to the floor fences and edges in Miami to increase downforce and improve balance. Despite the sprint weekend format with limited practice, the team believes the changes pose "little risk" due to stable airflow characteristics. Only Max Verstappen had the new floor, while Yuki Tsunoda would get it in Imola. Early feedback showed less understeer, but some problems remained. In the sprint, Red Bull lost time on the long straight, which showed that engine power and straight-line speed were possible weaknesses.

This left him with only one timed lap, which was not enough to stay in the fight. Gasly had no problems and carried on. Doohan’s anger came through clearly on the team radio and in his post-session comments, where he blamed the team for a costly and avoidable mistake.
