Norris scores first pole in Monaco as he and Leclerc lock out front row | Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying Results 2025

One of the most critical qualifying sessions of the year has wrapped up on the world-famous Circuit de Monaco. Like in Imola, drivers were using the C6 tires, the softest option for this season. Ferrari’s Saturday started off shaky, as Lewis Hamilton met the wall in FP3, but things turned upward as both finished in the top five, but Lando Norris could not be beat. Here is a breakdown of everything that happened:

Q1:

• OUT: Bortoleto, Bearman, Gasly, Stroll, Colapinto 
• Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto started the session on the C5 mediums instead of the C6 softs.
  
  • After the first set of hot laps, both Alpines were at the very bottom of the time sheet, and switched back to the softs. Despite the switch, both were eliminated in the first round
• Lance Stroll was investigated for impeding Gasly, as was Lewis Hamilton for impeding Max Verstappen.
• The session was red flagged in the very last seconds after Kimi Antonelli hit the barriers at the Nouvelle Chicane.
  
  • Antonelli’s Q1 time was fast enough to advance him to Q2, but he was unable to set a time.
• Stroll and Oliver Bearman both have grid penalties that will push them even further back on the starting grid tomorrow
  
  • Stroll has a 1-place penalty for causing a collision in FP1.
  • Bearman has a 10-place penalty for overtaking under a red flag in FP2.

Q2: 

• OUT: Sainz, Tsunoda, Hulkenberg, Russell, Antonelli
• Ferrari and Williams chose to start this session on medium tires, likely to leave them an extra set of softs for the race itself
• The session was red-flagged with 10:08 left when George Russell was forced to stop in the tunnel of the track.
  
  • After smoke coming from the front brakes in Q1, Russell’s car lost power in Q2
• Alex Albon outqualified Carlos Sainz for the first time in four race weekends
  
  • Sainz set an initial time on mediums and tried to improve on the softs, but was unable to find the grip he needed
• Lando Norris topped the timesheet ahead of Charles Leclerc by a mere 0.011s.
• Liam Lawson advances to Q3 for the first time this season.
  
  • Isack Hadjar makes his 4th Q3 appearance, while Yuki Tsunoda was unable to advance to the final round of qualifying

Q3: 

• Top 3: Norris, Leclerc, Piastri
• Lap times got faster and faster throughout the session, topping out at a new track record of 1:09.954 for Norris
• Hamilton and Verstappen round out the top 5 for the session
• Hadjar gets the best start of his F1 career in P6.
• Esteban Ocon and Liam Lawson get their best qualifying results of the season, with P8 and P9 respectively
• Leclerc was consisently among the top, and missed out on pole by just one tenth

* Lance Stroll received a 3-place grid penalty for impeding Pierre Gasly

*Lewis Hamilton received a 3-place grid penalty for impeding Max Verstappen
