Oscar Piastri secures pole ahead of teammate, Lando Norris, as McLaren internal battle heats up
The Spanish heat hit the track on Saturday afternoon, as Qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix got under way. This all-arounder track put the drivers to the ultimate test, and the qualifying session was our first taste how the brand new flexi wings technical directive might affect things. Yet in the end, McLaren’s dominance continued, as Piastri and Norris locked out the front row, with Verstappen right behind them.
Q1:
- OUT: Hulkenberg, Ocon, Sainz, Colapinto, Tsunoda
- Oscar Piastri, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris topped the time sheet after the first round of hot laps.
- With about 6 minutes left in the session, Franco Colapinto had a problem with his car and stopped around the pit lane exit with the majority of the field waiting behind him.
- He was forced to retire, with the lap time he set at the beginning of the session leaving him in P19
- Everyone waiting behind him was given the okay to pass Colapinto in the pit lane in order to begin their own laps
- Home hero Carlos Sainz had his first Q1 exit at this track, as he has never qualified outside of the top 12 at the Spanish Grand Prix before
- After asking his garage to check the floor of the car after the first run, Yuki Tsunoda found himself at the very bottom of the time sheet.
Q2:
- OUT: Albon, Bortoleto, Lawson, Stroll, Bearman
- About half-way through the session, George Russell reported dark rain-clouds approaching Turn 13 of the track.
- The clouds continued to roll in but the track stayed dry for the rest of Qualifying.

- Williams’s qualifying misfortunes continued as Alex Albon just missed out on Q3 by 0.03s
- Albon nonetheless did well given his limited run time during this weekend’s practice sessions. He sat out of FP1 as rookie Victor Martins took over for the session, and missed out on most of FP2 due to a brake issue.
- Gabriel Bortoleto set his best F1 qualifying result yet with a P12.
Q3:
- Top 3: Piastri, Norris, Verstappen
- Just 0.015 separated Norris and Piastri after the first run of timed laps.
- The internal battle in McLaren got under way, as Piastri jumped out of the way at the end of his first hot lap so as not to give Norris much of a tow as the Brit began his own run.
- Piastri took pole, with Norris 0.209s behind him, the biggest pole margin of the season so far.
- Verstappen and Russell set the exact same lap time, with Verstappen setting it first to secure P3.
