We may have thought everything was all but settled after Qualifying at the Monaco Grand Prix, but things had only gotten started as more action ensued on race day.

Pre-race:

  • Before the race even started, things got shuffled around thanks to a series of penalties across the grid:
    • Oliver Bearman had a 10-place grid penalty for overtaking under a red flag during FP2, pushing him from P17 to P20.
    • Lance Stroll got a 1-place grid penalty for causing a collision with Charles Leclerc in FP1, along with 3-place penalty for impeding Pierre Gasly in Qualifying. Bearman’s penalty keeps Stroll at P19
    • Lewis Hamilton received a 3-place grid penalty for impeding Max Verstappen during Qualifying, sending him from P4 to P7.

Start:

  • For the first time in his F1 career, Charles Leclerc found himself on the left side of the front row at Monaco, as he started in P2.
  • Pole sitter Lando Norris got a good launch for the start but had a double front lock-up after the first turn, narrowly avoiding a close call with Charles Leclerc before securing the lead.

Race:

  • The Virtual Safety Car was out almost immediately as Gabriel Bortoleto went nose-first into the barriers at Portier on Lap 1,
    • He was able to drive back to the pit safely and after a front wing change was back on the road
    • In the meantime, Yuki Tsunoda, Pierre Gasly, and Bearman took the chance to make the first series of pit stops
    • We went back to regular racing on Lap 4.
  • Gasly brought out a yellow flag on Lap 9 after colliding with the back of Tsunoda at the Nouvelle Chicane.
    • The Alpine lost its front wing, but proceeded to the pit, and the track marshalls were able to clear the track quickly, avoiding the need for a safety car
    • Gasly unfortunately sustained too much damage, and his race was finished from there.
  • On Lap 19, Hamilton was the first front runner to enter the pit, triggering a cascade of front-runners coming in to complete their first of two mandatory stops
  • Isack Hadjar, who had made his first stop on Lap 14, was the first to complete two stops on Lap 22, firmly cementing himself in the points.
    • Liam Lawson played the team game brilliantly, holding back the field to give Hadjar enough space for a pit stop
  • Fernando Alonso’s streak of bad luck continued as he was forced to retire on Lap 38, due to power unit problems
  • Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon played the team game with each other, holding off cars from behind.
  • This frustrated George Russell, who felt that Albon’s braking was erratic and overtook the Williams off-track on Lap 50 and chose to take the penalty instead of giving the place back
    • For this, he was given a drive-through penalty, which he served 3 laps later
  • After making his first pit stop on Lap 28, Max Verstappen found himself leading the race in the second half.
  • Verstappen slowed down Norris enough for Leclerc to close the gap to him, and have several great looks at an overtake on one of the most notoriously difficult tracks to gain position on
    • The three stayed close together for the last 15 laps of the race, with Piastri eventually joining them to put pressure on Leclerc.

Checkered Flag:

  • Norris successfully held off a very crafty Leclerc to keep the lead he started with and grab his first win at Monaco.
  • Leclerc fought valiantly and added yet another Monaco podium to his record, while Piastri rounded off the podium
    • Overall, Ferrari had one of their best performances of the year, with Hamilton persevering in P5
  • Verstappen’s tires held on to the very end while he waited out a potential red flag that never came. He ultimately came in on the penultimate lap, finishing just off the podium.
  • VCARB got their best finish yet, with Hadjar in P6, and Lawson in P8

Post-race:

  • Russell was given a second drive-through penalty after the race was over for going off-track. This added a further 30 seconds to his overall time.
