Oscar Piastri takes pole position in Imola as Kimi Antonelli and both Ferrari drivers miss out on Q3
The weekend heats up at the Autodromo Internazionale, as Oscar Piastri takes pole for the first race of the European leg of the F1 season. The teams were setting times on the tricky C6 softs, the softest compound of the year, for the first time. Performance in qualifying was essential, as Imola has relatively low degradation and is a difficult track to overtake on.
Q1
- OUT: Tsunoda, Bearman, Ocon, Hulkenberg, Lawson
- The session was almost immediately red-flagged, with 12:13 left, as Yuki Tsunoda crashed at the Villeneuve chicane.
- Tsunoda was thankfully okay, walking away from the accident, but it was a massive crash that left the car severely damaged.
- Franco Colapinto may be facing a grid penalty for entering the fast lane before the session had officially resumed due to a miscommunication with his race engineer.
- Hulkenberg dipped into the gravel on his second flying lap, costing him the time he needed to get into Q2.
- The session was red-flagged for a second time as Colapinto hit the wall at Turn 4 on his debut with Alpine.
- Like Tsunoda, Colapinto was okay. He advanced to Q2 based on the time he set on his first flying lap, earlier in the session.
Q2
- OUT: Colapinto, Bortoleto, Antonelli, Hamilton, Leclerc
- The start of Q2 was delayed while the stewards investigated whether or not Bearman completed his flying lap before the second red flag.
- Unfortunately, the stewards ruled that Bearman did not cross the finish line in time, meaning Gabriel Bortoleto advanced to Q2.
- Kimi Antonelli struggled through his flying lap, and was unable to advance to Q3 at his home race.
- Both Ferraris were unable to set sufficient lap times, with Charles Leclerc visibly upset as he left his car. Not a great day for Italian fans.
- Carlos Sainz had a particularly dominant flying lap, putting himself into the top of the timesheet for the session.
- Both Aston Martins made it into the top 10 and advanced to Q3, giving them a great shot for double-points this weekend.
- Aston Martin has brought their biggest upgrade package so far this weekend, with both a new floor and bodywork
Q3
- Top 3: Piastri, Verstappen, Russell
- Oscar Piastri continues his streak of dominance with yet another pole position of the season.
- Verstappen struggled through the middle sector of his lap, costing him the time he needed for pole, but finished a close P2.
- Russell switched to the medium tires, using a scrubbed set for his second run of the session.
- The gamble worked well for him as he finished P3, pushing Lando Norris to P4 on the grid
- Fernando Alonso, who is still without points, rounded off the top 5, giving him one of his best shots for points in the season so far.
- Isack Hadjar was the only rookie to make it to Q3. He finished the session in P9.
